Calvert-Lewin cancels out Mbeumo as Leeds hold Manchester United to a 1-1 draw

Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United a half-time lead at Elland Road, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled from Tarik Muharemović’s knockdown six minutes after the break. Leeds had the better of the second half, while Michael Carrick’s United extended their wait for a Premier League win.

Leeds, England: Michael Carrick left Elland Road with a point and the same problem he arrived with. Manchester United led, then let the lead go, and a team that has not won in the league since August is still waiting.

Mbeumo gives United the lead

The opening goal came in the 35th minute. Youri Tielemans delivered a low cross and Mbeumo got on the end of it to score. United took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Leeds answer from a corner

Daniel Farke’s side restarted with more intent and equalised in the 51st minute. Anton Stach swung in a corner, Tarik Muharemović flicked it on, and Calvert-Lewin lashed a first-time finish past Senne Lammens. Leeds finished the match with 61 per cent of possession and kept pressing for a winner.

Late chances came and went: a sidefoot effort from Stach took a deflection off a defender and Lammens recovered. United created little after the interval, and the second half belonged to the home side.

United’s winless run goes on

The draw leaves United with one league win from seven games, four draws and two defeats. That victory, a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, came at Old Trafford at the end of August. Among the draws was a 1-1 against ten-man Tottenham on 10 October. Three days later they lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

For Leeds, the equaliser came from a set piece, and Farke’s side had the better of the second half.
