Bruno Fernandes scored in the 40th, 61st and 68th minutes and set up Bryan Mbeumo as Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. Leif Davis had given Ipswich the lead on 29 before a Jacob Greaves own goal turned the game. Leeds drew 1-1 with Brentford at Elland Road and Sunderland beat Fulham 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

They had earned it, too. Senne Lammens had already denied Julio Enciso one-on-one and tipped a Daizen Maeda effort behind before the visitors went in front, and for half an hour the side beaten 2-0 at Hull the previous weekend looked like losing again.
Davis Silences Old Trafford
The goal came on 29 minutes and it was worth the wait. Abdul Fatawu delivered from the left, Leif Davis met it on the half-volley from the middle of the box, and the ball flew into the top corner past Lammens. Two minutes later Davis nearly had a second, Lammens parrying.
United’s equaliser arrived on 40 and came from nothing. Marcelino Nunez lost the ball in possession, Matheus Cunha took it off him and released Fernandes on the break, and the captain finished past Kjell Scherpen. Half-time: 1-1.
Greaves’ Afternoon
Ten minutes into the second half Harry Maguire struck low and hard. The ball took a heavy deflection off Jacob Greaves and went in, and a VAR check followed for a handball by Maguire in the build-up. The goal stood, on the reading that Maguire’s shot was not on target and Greaves applied the decisive touch — a distinction that left Gary O’Neil unimpressed.

Five minutes later Greaves brought Cunha down as he ran through, took a yellow card, and watched Fernandes roll the penalty into the opposite corner. Fernandes had missed twice from the spot in pre-season. He did not look like missing this one.
The hat-trick followed on 68 and it was scrappy in the way hat-trick goals often are. Kobbie Mainoo’s shot was blocked, Mbeumo’s follow-up was blocked, and the loose ball fell to Fernandes, who took a touch and dragged it into the far corner.
Fernandes Finishes It
Mbeumo, who had hit the bar early in the half, got his reward on 82. Fernandes played the pass and Mbeumo lifted a first-time finish over the advancing Scherpen. Chuba Akpom rolled in a consolation in added time after United lost the ball near their own corner flag.
It was the first time United had scored five in a Premier League match since the opening day of 2021-22, a 5-1 win over Leeds that also featured a Fernandes hat-trick. Marcus Rashford made his first Premier League start since December 2024. Carrick said afterwards that the mentality and the stubbornness were what pleased him, and made a point of naming Mainoo — making his first start of the season — as his man of the match rather than his hat-trick scorer.
Calvert-Lewin Keeps the Streak Alive
Brentford were the better side at Elland Road for the first half. Kevin Schade guided in Keane Lewis-Potter’s low cross with the outside of his right boot shortly before the break, and Keith Andrews’ side, fresh from thrashing Tottenham, controlled the game with pace and aggression.
Daniel Farke changed things at the interval and it eventually told. On 79, Lukas Nmecha controlled in the area and fired across goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to tap in. It kept alive a run that now stretches 11 seasons — no other player has scored in every Premier League campaign over that span. Both sides have four points.
Isidor Settles It at the Stadium of Light
Fulham did not manage a shot on target. Sunderland had the better of the ball and finished with 1.75 expected goals to their visitors’ 1.02, but it took the bench to settle it: Wilson Isidor struck the post on 71 and tapped in Habib Diarra’s cross four minutes later, both substitutes.
It is Sunderland’s first win of the season after an opening-day defeat at Ipswich, and a second straight loss for Fulham under Alvaro Arbeloa. Sunderland travel to Brentford next; Fulham host Crystal Palace.
