Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home after doctors identified meningeal irritation as the cause of his training-ground collapse, sporting director Max Eberl said. Assistant Aaron Danks remains in charge, with no return date set.
Munich, Germany: Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is out of hospital and recovering at home, five days after he collapsed at the club’s training ground. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the news to German broadcaster ARD shortly before Bayern’s DFB-Pokal tie against Magdeburg on Wednesday, adding that doctors had identified the cause as meningeal irritation.
What Bayern have confirmed
Kompany, 40, collapsed on Friday while watching Bayern’s reserve team train in Munich. The club first described the problem as a virus, but Eberl said the investigation had since found the cause of the incident. Bayern have not released further medical detail.
According to Eberl, the coach’s rehabilitation now consists of rest and medication, and Eberl said he was very confident Kompany would be back on the touchline at full strength soon. The club had said on Saturday that his return to the dugout would be a matter of “weeks, not days”, and no return date has been announced.
Warning signs before the collapse
Kompany had looked unwell and was limping during Bayern’s 6-1 home win over RB Leipzig in mid-October. He was doubtful for the Champions League game against Arsenal but coached the side through the 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Wednesday 21 October, two days before the collapse.
Danks in charge, Dortmund next
English assistant Aaron Danks has been in charge since, and Bayern won 3-1 at Freiburg under him on Sunday. Danks said afterwards that the staff were avoiding football talk with Kompany while he recovers. Bayern then beat Magdeburg 6-1 in the cup on Wednesday night, and Danks is expected to remain in charge when Borussia Dortmund visit the Allianz Arena for a Bundesliga match on Saturday 31 October.
For Bayern, the news ends a worrying week on a positive note, though the timetable for Kompany’s return remains open.
