Declan Rice’s 82nd-minute equaliser rescued Arsenal at Bayern Munich in a 2-2 Champions League draw, cancelling out Harry Kane’s second-half penalty. The point came with a worry attached, as Bukayo Saka limped off with a suspected thigh problem inside the opening ten minutes.
Munich, Germany: Arsenal walked into the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night to face a Bayern side led by Harry Kane, and walked out with a point they had to win twice. They led through Eberechi Eze, trailed after a penalty and levelled through Rice in a match that turned on a VAR check, a handball and an injury before the game had found its rhythm.
An early blow for Arsenal
Bukayo Saka lasted barely ten minutes. He went down holding his thigh, signalled to the bench and was replaced by Eze. The problem was described as a suspected muscle injury, and the extent was not immediately clear, leaving Arsenal to wait on a diagnosis.
Eze steps into the gap
The substitute needed fifteen minutes to make his mark. In the 25th minute Martin Ødegaard found him, Eze finished, and an offside flag was overturned by VAR to let the goal stand. Within the opening half-hour, Arsenal had lost one attacker to injury and gained a goal from the man who replaced him.
It did not last. Alphonso Davies equalised before half-time, collecting a pass from Kane that carried through the Arsenal midfield and past Gabriel. It was a reminder that Kane hurts opponents with his passing as much as with his finishing.
Kane from the spot
The decisive moment of the second half came when Kane’s shot struck the arm of Jurriën Timber inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot and Kane, as he so often does, converted. The goal extended his scoring run to ten consecutive Champions League matches. After the game, Kane said a draw was a fair reflection of the 90 minutes.
Rice finds the answer
Arsenal refused to fold. With eight minutes left, substitute Viktor Gyökeres was central to a move that ended with Rice beating Manuel Neuer for 2-2. It capped a display of resilience from a team that arrived in Munich after a 3-0 win over Lille at the Emirates and a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest built on Noni Madueke’s late strike.
Arsenal now wait for news on Saka. Whatever the diagnosis, they leave Bavaria with a hard-earned point and the knowledge that their squad can still find a way to score when a key player is lost.
Result: Bayern Munich 2, Arsenal 2 (UEFA Champions League league phase, Allianz Arena, Munich). Bayern: Alphonso Davies (first half), Harry Kane (penalty, second half). Arsenal: Eberechi Eze (25′), Declan Rice (82′).
