Adrian Mannarino beat eighth seed Jakub Menšík 6-4, 7-5 to become the first quarter-finalist at the Vienna Open. Daniil Medvedev, Lorenzo Musetti and Tallon Griekspoor also won on Wednesday, with Griekspoor setting up a Thursday meeting with top seed Alexander Zverev.
Vienna, Austria: A 38-year-old qualifier ended the day as the first man into the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open, and last week’s ATP 250 champions all won as well. Adrian Mannarino beat a seeded opponent, while Daniil Medvedev, who won in Almaty, Lorenzo Musetti, the Lyon champion, and Brussels winner Tallon Griekspoor kept their momentum going, with Griekspoor earning a date with top seed Alexander Zverev.
Mannarino knocks out the eighth seed
Mannarino beat eighth seed Jakub Menšík 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 46 minutes to become the tournament’s first quarter-finalist. The Frenchman came through qualifying to reach the main draw and needed only two sets to see off the young Czech.
Medvedev recovers, Musetti never blinks
Medvedev, the third seed, trailed Daniel Mérida 4-1 in the first set and recovered to win 7-6(5), 6-1 in under 90 minutes. It was his Tour-leading 39th hard-court win of the year and his fifth victory in a row, and it lifted him to fifth in the Race to Turin. He plays Cameron Norrie next.
Musetti beat sixth seed Frances Tiafoe 7-6(6), 7-5 in just over two hours. He faced no break points and won 40 of 49 first-serve points, the third top-10 win of his season.
Griekspoor earns a Zverev showdown
Griekspoor took the first set against Brandon Nakashima 6-1 and lost the second 6-4 before winning the decider in a tie-break, 7-6(2). He reaches the next round, where top seed Zverev awaits on Thursday. Zverev leads their head-to-head 9-3, although Griekspoor won their most recent meeting, in Montreal in August. Zverev, who saved four match points against Martin Landaluce, would move into the quarter-finals with a win. The ATP says that would take him to world No. 1 for the first time on Monday.
Nikoloz Basilashvili beat Austrian wildcard Jurij Rodionov 7-6(3), 6-1 and now meets second seed Carlos Alcaraz, who survived a tie-break against Karen Khachanov in his opener. Rodionov’s exit also ended the home hopes in singles.
