Tottenham Hotspur beat Coventry City 3-1 for their first Premier League win of 2026-27. James Maddison scored on his first competitive start since May 2025, Omar Marmoush netted his first Spurs goal and Ben Davies sealed victory in stoppage time, lifting Roberto De Zerbi’s side off the bottom.
London, England: Seven games, no wins, and a home crowd with little patience left. Tottenham Hotspur began Monday night at the foot of the Premier League and ended it with three points, a first goal for Omar Marmoush and Dejan Kulusevski back in a Spurs shirt after a long absence.
Maddison makes the stadium exhale
James Maddison needed 14 minutes. Playing his first competitive start for the club since May 2025, he met Mohammed Kudus’s cutback and curled a first-time shot into the top corner, against a Coventry side he once played for.
The goal settled a nervy home crowd, and for a spell it settled the match. Frank Lampard’s team dropped into a low block, and Spurs, without a league win all season, had to find a way through it.
Rudoni answers, Marmoush restores the lead
Coventry did not fade. Three minutes after the restart, Jack Rudoni equalised from close range in the 49th minute, and the familiar anxiety crept back into the stands.
It lasted nine minutes. In the 58th, Marmoush struck for his first goal in Spurs colours, putting the hosts back in front and bringing relief as much as celebration.
A late finish and a long-awaited return
The biggest cheer of the night came in the 87th minute, when Kulusevski stepped off the bench for his first appearance in 17 months. The crowd greeted every touch. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, fellow substitute Ben Davies took the game away from Coventry with a finish from the edge of the box.
De Zerbi said afterwards that he was pleased with the result but felt Spurs had not played well, crediting Coventry’s low block for the difficulty it caused. Lampard said his side had been competitive and described the third goal as a mistake that defined the match.
A table that looks different
The win lifts Spurs to 16th, with Coventry one place below them. It follows a stoppage-time Dominic Solanke header that salvaged a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on 10 October.
Next comes a trip to Chelsea on Saturday, 24 October, against a side that beat Everton 2-0 through a Pedro Neto double. Coventry, who began their return to the top flight with a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, will reflect on a game they were in until the very end.
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Coventry City (Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Monday, 19 October 2026)
Goals: Maddison 14′, Marmoush 58′, Davies 90+6′ (Tottenham); Rudoni 49′ (Coventry)
