Chinmay Sutar’s unbeaten 400 for Mizoram makes him only the second Indian to reach the first-class landmark

Chinmay Sutar finished unbeaten on 400 off 517 balls as Mizoram declared on 581 for 9 against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy. The 29-year-old, a Mumbai player until this season, became only the second Indian to score a first-class quadruple century.

Sovima, India: Mizoram were 392 for 9 when the last man walked out. Chinmay Sutar was on 231. By the time the declaration came, he had matched a feat no Indian batter had managed in 78 years.

Carrying the tail

The closing act was a partnership no scorecard could have predicted. Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak, the number 11, stayed unbeaten on 14 while Sutar scored 169 of the 189 runs the pair added for the tenth wicket. Mizoram ended on 581 for 9 declared, and Sutar’s share of it was just under 69 per cent.

His innings lasted 517 balls and included 46 fours and seven sixes, a marathon that ran into the second day of the Plate Group match on Monday, 19 October.

Where it sits in the record books

Within the Ranji Trophy, only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49 is higher. Sutar passed Prithvi Shaw’s 379 against Assam in January 2023, which had stood as the next-best score.

Across all first-class cricket, he became the tenth batter to reach 400. The company includes Brian Lara, who did it twice with his 501 not out and 400 not out, Don Bradman, Hanif Mohammad, William Ponsford, Aftab Baloch, Archie MacLaren, Sam Northeast and Graeme Hick.

A late-blooming journey

Sutar is 29 and was born in Mumbai, where he played the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the state. Ahead of this season he moved to Mizoram after receiving a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Nagaland was only his second first-class match. In the first, against Manipur, he made 35 and 99 before being run out one short of a maiden hundred. The 400 is therefore also his first first-class century.

Innings: Chinmay Sutar 400 not out (517 balls, 46 fours, 7 sixes); Mizoram 581 for 9 declared v Nagaland (Ranji Trophy Plate Group, Sovima, Monday, 19 October 2026)

Key stand: 189 for the tenth wicket, Sutar 169 and Chhakchhuak 14*
