Harmanpreet Kaur made 126 and Deepti Sharma an unbeaten 106 as India Women piled up 328 for 6, then bowled Zimbabwe out for 207 to win the second ODI in Vadodara by 121 runs. The result gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Vadodara, India: For the first 20 overs of Zimbabwe’s reply, the target looked as if it might be tested. Then the chase fell apart, and the real story of the afternoon at the Kotambi Stadium belonged to two batters who had turned a shaky start into a mountain.
From a wobble to a platform
India won the toss and chose to bat, and the innings began badly. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma both fell cheaply. Pratika Rawal steadied it, and her third-wicket stand with Harmanpreet added 124 off 119 balls. Rawal, who had hit an unbeaten century in the first ODI, made 61 off 67 balls this time.
Harmanpreet and Deepti take over
Harmanpreet reached her eighth ODI hundred and went on to 126 off 121 balls before Michelle Mavunga dismissed her. By then the damage was done. She and Deepti had added 153 for the fifth wicket off 138 balls, and Deepti finished the job in style, unbeaten on 106 off 86 balls. India closed their 50 overs on 328 for 6.
It was a notable innings for Harmanpreet in a series she began under a new captain. Mandhana was named captain for the Zimbabwe series after Harmanpreet stepped down, and Harmanpreet answered with the biggest score of the match.
Zimbabwe fade after a brisk start
Zimbabwe’s reply began with intent. They were 104 for 1 after 20 overs, and the target of 329 briefly felt within reach. Then Vaishnavi Sharma and Deepti turned the contest. Between them they took seven wickets, Vaishnavi finishing with 4 for 39 and Deepti with 3 for 32. Zimbabwe lost nine wickets for 103 runs and were all out for 207 in 48.5 overs.
Modester Mupachikwa top-scored with 49 and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano added 46, but neither innings could rescue the chase.
A series won with a game to spare
The margin of 121 runs sealed the series. India, who won the opener by nine wickets, now lead the three-match contest 2-0, and the all-round performance leaves them in command heading into the final match.
