Hoffenheim forward Andrej Kramarić striking a penalty against Bayer Leverkusen in Sinsheim

Kramarić scores Hoffenheim’s 1,000th Bundesliga goal as a late flurry sinks Leverkusen 3-0

Substitute Andrej Kramarić scored Hoffenheim’s 1,000th Bundesliga goal from the penalty spot in the 79th minute, then helped create two more as Alexander Prass and Max Moerstedt struck late to beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in Sinsheim and end their run of six straight wins.

Sinsheim, Germany: For 79 minutes the goals refused to come. Then a VAR check, a penalty and a club milestone changed the afternoon, and Hoffenheim added two more before the final whistle to turn a stalemate into a convincing win.

A goalless first hour

Hoffenheim created the better chances before the break. Adam Hložek beat Mark Flekken, but his effort struck the woodwork and was cleared. Fisnik Asllani saw two right-footed drives parried by the Leverkusen goalkeeper.

The visitors had their openings too. Patrik Schick headed wide from a corner in the fifth minute, and later Robert Andrich’s strike was parried by Oliver Baumann as Leverkusen pushed for a way back into the game. The chances never added up to a goal, and the match stayed level into the final quarter-hour.

Kramarić marks the milestone

The deadlock broke in the 79th minute. Edmond Tapsoba fouled Asllani in the box, and after a VAR review the referee pointed to the spot. Kramarić, who had come on as a substitute, converted the penalty. It was Hoffenheim’s 1,000th goal in the Bundesliga.

Prass and Moerstedt finish the job

The second goal came in the 89th minute. Moerstedt laid the ball off to Kramarić, who played a weighted pass to Prass, and Prass finished past Flekken. Celebrating, he took off his shirt, picked up a second yellow card and was sent off, but the damage was done.

In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Kramarić shot and the ball came back off the crossbar. Moerstedt was first to the rebound and scored the third. Kramarić had a hand in all three goals: he scored the penalty, set up Prass and created the rebound. Hoffenheim’s expected-goals total was above three, against 0.62 for Leverkusen, a measure of how one-sided the game had been.

What it means

The result ended Leverkusen’s run of six straight wins in all competitions and left them fourth in the table. Hoffenheim climbed to nine points and into the middle of the table. For a club celebrating a landmark goal, it was a fitting way to mark it.
