Bayern Munich beat Magdeburg 6-1 with Harry Kane on the bench, Leverkusen came from 2-0 down to win 5-2, and Freiburg and Stuttgart scored late. Schalke lost at Dynamo Dresden and Hoffenheim went out on penalties at Holstein Kiel in the DFB-Pokal round of 32.
The holders showed no mercy, a Bundesliga giant needed a rescue act and two top-flight sides found the exit in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night. Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen led the way into the last 16, while Schalke and Hoffenheim were beaten by second-division opposition.
Bayern run riot without Kane
Bayern beat Magdeburg 6-1 in Munich with Harry Kane, newly crowned as the Ballon d’Or winner, on the bench. Ismael Saibari started in his place, and Michael Olise needed ten minutes to open the scoring, tapping in after Saibari had rolled the ball across from a through ball by Lennart Karl.
Magdeburg hit back within five minutes. Mateusz Żukowski cut in from the left and drove a shot past goalkeeper Jonas Urbig into the far corner for 1-1 in the 15th minute. Bayern’s answer was swift: Olise released Saibari, who lifted the ball over Dominik Reimann for 2-1 in the 21st minute.
Alphonso Davies, on at half-time, won the penalty that Olise converted early in the second half. Davies then scored himself from Karl’s cross at the back post in the 70th minute, and Nathaniel Brown finished from close range three minutes later. Substitute David Santos Daiber added the sixth in stoppage time, set up by Josip Stanišić.
Leverkusen turn a 2-0 deficit into a rout
Bayer Leverkusen trailed 2-0 at home after goals from Rafael Lubach in the 13th minute and Sigurd Haugen in the 30th, the latter a tap-in at the far post after William Böving’s low cross. Edmond Tapsoba pulled one back with a header from a corner in the 41st minute, with VAR checking a possible handball before allowing the goal.
Tapsoba levelled four minutes after the restart, following up when Nürnberg goalkeeper Reichert saved his first header. Patrik Schick converted a penalty in the 70th minute to put Leverkusen in front, Jonas Hofmann made it 4-2 in the 78th, and Lucas Vázquez completed the 5-2 win in the 89th minute.
Goto’s double and Undav’s stoppage-time winner
SC Freiburg, beaten 3-1 by Bayern on Sunday, came from behind to beat second-tier VfL Wolfsburg 3-2. Igor Matanović opened the scoring, but Kento Shiogai scored twice for Wolfsburg, the second just before half-time, to make it 2-1 at the break. Substitute Keisuke Goto headed in Grifo’s corner in the 76th minute and scored the winner in stoppage time from Philipp Lienhart’s long ball.
VfB Stuttgart needed even longer for their victory at Paderborn. Deniz Undav scored the only goal in the 91st minute, with the match 0-0 until then.
Cup upsets in Dresden and Kiel
Second-division Dynamo Dresden beat Schalke 2-0. Patrice Čović scored in the 53rd minute, and Christoph Daferner headed in the second in the 88th to settle it.
At Holstein Kiel, Hoffenheim, whose recent Bundesliga win over Leverkusen brought up their 1,000th league goal, went out on penalties. Adam Hložek put Hoffenheim ahead in the 11th minute, Tim Lemperle had a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR check, and Adrian Kaprálik levelled for Kiel in the 23rd. Extra time brought no goals, and Kiel won the shootout 4-3 after Hoffenheim misses, including Leon Avdullahu’s.
The round-of-16 draw takes place on Sunday.
