Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry celebrating after scoring against Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion

Upamecano, Gnabry and Olise sink Freiburg as Bayern win 3-1 without Kompany

Dayot Upamecano scored in the 16th minute, Serge Gnabry struck his 100th Bundesliga goal in the 42nd and Michael Olise sealed it in stoppage time as Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Freiburg, with assistant Aaron Danks in charge after Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital.

Freiburg, Germany: Bayern Munich arrived at the Europa-Park Stadion without their head coach and without Manuel Neuer in goal. They left with three points, the top spot in the Bundesliga and a milestone for Gnabry.

A coach in hospital, a stand-in on the touchline

Vincent Kompany collapsed on Friday while watching the second team train and was taken to hospital. Sporting director Max Eberl said his condition was stable and that the club would give him all the time he needed to recover. Aaron Danks took charge on the touchline, and Jonas Urbig replaced the injured Neuer in goal.

Upamecano and Gnabry take control

Bayern did not wait long. In the 16th minute Upamecano won the ball in defence, carried it forward, took a pass from Olise and finished past Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. A defender had turned a counter-attack into a goal.

The second came just before the break. In the 42nd minute Gnabry played a one-two with Nathaniel Brown and finished with composure. It was his 100th Bundesliga goal. Harry Kane headed over the bar at one point, and Backhaus denied Ismael Saibari, but Bayern went in with a two-goal cushion.

Freiburg pull one back, Olise settles it

Freiburg got back into the game in the 82nd minute when Vincenzo Grifo’s low cross was deflected into his own net by Tom Bischof. Matthias Ginter then had a late header, and Urbig saved it to protect the lead.

The game closed in stoppage time. In the fifth minute of added time, Backhaus gave up possession inside his own half, and Olise rolled the ball into an empty net to make it 3-1.

Back on top of the Bundesliga

The win returned Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga on 17 points. It followed a 6-1 win over RB Leipzig in their previous league game and a 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal in midweek. Even with Kompany and Neuer missing, Bayern found a way to win away from home.

Result: Freiburg 1-3 Bayern Munich (Bundesliga, matchday 7, Europa-Park Stadion, Freiburg, Sunday 25 October 2026). Goals: Dayot Upamecano 16′, Serge Gnabry 42′, Tom Bischof (own goal) 82′, Michael Olise 90+5′.
