Milan beat Udinese 2-0 in Udine on Sunday, with Christian Pulisic scoring in the sixth minute from a Luka Modrić free-kick and Omari Hutchinson adding his first Milan goal in the 65th. The win answered Thursday’s Europa League defeat and left Udinese with six straight losses.
Udine, Italy: Milan needed six minutes to make their point. Three days after a heavy European defeat on the south coast of England, Ruben Amorim’s side went to the Bluenergy Stadium, scored almost at once and never let Udinese back into the match.
A free-kick taken quickly
The opening goal came from alertness rather than a rehearsed move. Modrić took a free-kick quickly, Udinese’s defence was caught off guard, and Pulisic ran through to beat goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and make it 1-0 in the sixth minute. Modrić was credited with the assist.
Milan had the better of the rest of the first half and finished the night with 19 shots to Udinese’s 12. The home side, short of confidence after five straight league defeats, rarely threatened to turn the match into a contest.
Hutchinson takes his chance
The second goal arrived in the 65th minute and carried a personal milestone. Ardon Jashari hit a low shot from the edge of the box, Okoye parried it, and Hutchinson reacted first to the rebound to score. It was his first goal for the club.
The goal settled a match that Milan had controlled without putting it beyond doubt.
Answering the Bournemouth defeat
The context made the result more valuable. Milan had been beaten 3-0 at Bournemouth in the Europa League on Thursday, a night on which Mike Maignan was sent off. They also travelled to Udine without Adrien Rabiot, Diego Moreira and Mario Gila, all newly injured. In their previous league match, Milan had held off Atalanta 3-2 at San Siro after leading 3-0.
Where the table stands
The win takes Milan to 18 points from eight Serie A games, four behind the leaders Inter. It also keeps alive an unbeaten league start for Amorim’s side, with five wins and three draws so far.
For Udinese the picture is bleaker. They have lost six league games in a row and have four points from eight matches, a record of one win, one draw and six defeats that leaves them in the bottom half of the table.
