Rayan, Tavernier and Evanilson sink Manchester United as Bournemouth win 3-0 at Old Trafford

Bournemouth beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, with Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scoring before half-time and Evanilson adding a third midway through the second half. Michael Carrick’s side stayed 16th, one point above the relegation zone, after he dropped captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench.

Manchester, England: Supporters expected a reaction from Manchester United and got a collapse. On an afternoon when the anger in the stands was aimed mostly at the club’s owners and hierarchy rather than the head coach, Bournemouth made the home side look every inch a team in trouble. By the final whistle, supporters were singing Carrick’s name even as they aimed their frustration at the people above him.

Rayan and Tavernier strike before the break

The visitors broke through in the 38th minute. Ayden Heaven’s lunge had conceded a free-kick on the right, and Justin Kluivert’s delivery reached the far post, where Rayan met it with a volley. Five minutes later United handed over a second. Leny Yoro stumbled under pressure from Adrien Truffert, the ball ran to Tavernier and he tapped it into an empty net before the interval.

Fernandes stays on the bench

The team news had dominated the build-up. Carrick left out Fernandes after the captain criticised his tactics following the 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. Carrick called the decision a purely football one, and Fernandes did not move from the bench all afternoon.

At half-time Carrick sent on Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans in search of a response. United found little. Evanilson had a goal chalked off for offside early in the second half, a warning that went unheeded.

Evanilson settles it

Around the 70th minute a long ball dropped into the space behind United’s defence. Evanilson reached it before goalkeeper Senne Lammens could, rounded him and curled the finish in from a narrow angle for 3-0. Lisandro Martinez had come on for Ayden Heaven earlier in the half, but the damage was done.

Asked about the performance, Rose said his side had simply been Bournemouth, a modest verdict on a first half in which they were clearly the better team. They came to Manchester after a 3-0 Europa League win over Milan and left with another three-goal victory.

Where it leaves United

United, who had also lost 4-1 at Como in midweek, are 16th on seven points, one point above the relegation zone, and have won just once in their first eight league games. Carrick spoke of a strange mix of emotions at the final whistle, with supporters booing the team yet singing his name. The 1-1 draw at Leeds a week earlier had offered little relief, and the Bournemouth defeat leaves Carrick, and those above him, with hard questions about how to turn a struggling season around. Bournemouth, by contrast, have now won consecutive matches in all competitions and travelled home with their confidence high.
