Alexander Zverev beat Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2 in 59 minutes to reach the Vienna semi-finals, where Alex de Minaur awaits after beating Matteo Berrettini. Daniil Medvedev secured his ATP Finals place by beating Adrian Mannarino, and Carlos Alcaraz edged Tommy Paul in a tie-break.
Vienna, Austria: The Erste Bank Open went from eight to four on Friday, and the last-four line-up it produced is a heavyweight one. Zverev meets de Minaur and Medvedev meets Alcaraz on Saturday, with all four quarter-finals decided in straight sets.
Zverev needs under an hour
Zverev had secured his rise to the top of the rankings on Thursday against Tallon Griekspoor, and he played like a man with nothing left to prove. Fery, the wild card who had beaten Lorenzo Musetti the day before, won only two games all match. The opening set went 6-0, the second 6-2, and the whole thing took 59 minutes, with Zverev hitting 19 winners.
It capped a week that began with real danger. Zverev saved four match points in a 13-11 tie-break against Martin Landaluce in his opener, and the German has looked increasingly comfortable since.
De Minaur holds off Berrettini
The other half of that semi-final was settled in two sets. De Minaur, the fifth seed, beat Berrettini 7-6, 6-2. Berrettini had a set point in the 12th game of the first set, but de Minaur saved it and took the tie-break. In the second set Berrettini created two break points in the opening game and converted neither. De Minaur then broke for the first time in the match, ran to a 3-0 lead and broke again to close it out.
Medvedev books his Turin ticket
Medvedev beat the qualifier Mannarino, ranked 73rd, 6-2, 6-3. He broke in the opening game and again for 5-2 to take the first set, then broke at 3-3 in the second and closed it out on his second match point. The win also confirmed his place at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, which run from 15 to 22 November.
Mannarino had been the story of the early rounds, becoming the tournament’s first quarter-finalist when he beat eighth seed Jakub MenÅ¡Ãk, but Medvedev gave him little to work with.
Alcaraz survives a tie-break
Alcaraz was the only quarter-finalist to be pushed to a tie-break. He beat Paul 6-4, 7-6(2), extending his run at ATP 500 level to 24 matches without defeat. It sets up a semi-final against Medvedev. Thursday’s round-up has the last-16 results that led to these pairings.
