Urvil Patel’s unbeaten 210 powers Gujarat to 534 as Kerala slip to 74 for 3 on Day 2 in Ahmedabad

Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel struck a maiden first-class double hundred, finishing unbeaten on 210 off 227 balls as Gujarat declared on 534 for 9 against Kerala in Ahmedabad. Kerala closed Day 2 on 74 for 3, still 460 runs behind.

Ahmedabad, India: Gujarat were 189 for 5 when Urvil Patel walked out at the Narendra Modi Stadium. By the time they declared on the second day of their Ranji Trophy round-four match against Kerala, he was 210 not out and the match had been tilted heavily in the hosts’ favour.

Rebuilding from 189 for 5

Aarya Desai’s 95 had given Gujarat a platform, but the innings lost its shape. Manan Hingrajia, Desai and Jaymeet Patel fell within six overs of each other, leaving Gujarat in trouble before Urvil and Vishal Jayswal put on 179 for the sixth wicket. Gujarat ended the first day on 300 for 5, with Urvil on 63 and Jayswal on 50. Jayswal was run out for 77 on the second morning, but Urvil kept going. He added 82 for the ninth wicket with Siddharth Desai, who made 18 off 94 balls, as Gujarat pushed past 500.

Urvil faced 227 balls and hit 17 fours and six sixes. Kerala’s attack could not remove him. Nedumankuzhy Basil took 3 for 80 and Aditya Sarwate 2 for 146, while Jalaj Saxena bowled 40 overs for one wicket.

Kerala wobble at the close

Gujarat declared at 534 for 9 after 144.2 overs and Kerala were 74 for 3 at stumps. Arzan Nagwaswalla took two of the three wickets, and Sachin Baby (14) and captain Vishnu Vinod (21) were at the crease at the close. Kerala still trail by 460 runs.

A fresh milestone for a known hitter

Urvil Patel’s name is best known in white-ball cricket. In November 2024 he hit a 28-ball century against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the fastest by an Indian in T20 cricket. This innings, built across two days, was a different test and his first double century in first-class cricket.

It was a big day for big scores in the round. Pradosh Ranjan Paul made 208 for Tamil Nadu against Chandigarh and Sanvir Singh 205 for Punjab against Andhra. Earlier this season, Sai Kishore took a hat-trick and ten wickets to give Tamil Nadu an innings win.
