Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar win India’s first archery gold of the Asian Para Games, edging Indonesia 151-148

Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar won the compound mixed team gold at the Asian Para Games, beating Indonesia 151-148 in Okazaki. It was India’s first archery gold of the Games, and it came from the pair who set a world-record ranking score on Monday.

Okazaki, Japan: India’s top seeds delivered what the ranking round had promised. Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar beat Indonesia’s Teodora Audi Ayudia Ferelly and Ken Swagumilang 151-148 in the compound mixed team final on Thursday, winning India’s first archery gold of the Asian Para Games.

The record that set the table

The pair arrived with a score nobody else could match. On Monday, Sheetal shot 704 and Toman 698 in the ranking round, a combined 1,402 that went above the previous world record of 1,400, as our ranking-round report detailed. That earned a direct route into the quarter-finals.

A knife-edge to the final

The knockouts were not a procession. India beat Japan 154-147 along the way, then survived the semi-final against Chinese Taipei by a single point, 142-141. The final was tighter than the ranking round suggested, with Indonesia within three points at the end, but India held on.

Two archers, two stories

Sheetal, 19, is the world champion in the women’s compound and shoots with her feet and legs. Toman is a CRPF constable who lost a leg in a 2022 Naxal IED blast and won the men’s compound world title in Gwangju in 2025. At the same championships the two took mixed team bronze together. The gold in Okazaki is a step up from that.

What it means for India

The title was the first of two golds on the day for Sheetal, who later added the individual crown. It followed her compound doubles silver with Payal Nag on Wednesday, so India’s archers have moved from silver to gold in two days.

Result: Compound mixed team final, Asian Para Games, Okazaki. Gold: India (Sheetal Devi, Toman Kumar) 151; Silver: Indonesia (Teodora Audi Ayudia Ferelly, Ken Swagumilang) 148. Semi-final: India 142, Chinese Taipei 141.
