Ruud reaches the Shanghai quarter-finals as Auger-Aliassime retires with a knee injury

Casper Ruud reached his first Shanghai Masters quarter-final on Wednesday when fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with a left knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set. The result completes Ruud’s set of Masters 1000 quarter-finals; he next faces Rafael Jodar on Friday.

Shanghai, China: The fourth-round match never got past its opening act. Ruud broke serve in the fourth game and led 5-2 when Auger-Aliassime, the fourth seed, hurt his left knee while serving and, after speaking with his team, called a halt.

The moment it unravelled

Ruud, the 20th seed, later said Auger-Aliassime may have twisted the knee in the fourth game, and that his opponent looked to be in a lot of pain from that point. He wished the Canadian a quick recovery. No further medical detail has been given beyond a knee problem.

The Canadian had reached the last 16 by winning his first two matches in Shanghai in three sets each, the second a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Pablo Carreno Busta.

A missing piece filled in

For Ruud the early finish still carries a milestone. He has now reached the quarter-finals at all nine Masters 1000 events, and Shanghai was the last one missing from his record. It is his first quarter-final at the tournament.

Jodar on Friday

Ruud’s next opponent is Rafael Jodar, the 12th seed, who came from a set down to beat Botic van de Zandschulp, the man who ended Arthur Fils’s run, earlier on Wednesday. They meet in the quarter-finals on Friday, October 16. Elsewhere in the draw, Alexander Zverev has already booked a last-eight meeting with Alex de Minaur.
