Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102 off 50 balls and Keemo Paul’s 5 for 41 gave West Indies a 24-run win over India in Hyderabad on Wednesday, levelling the T20I series 2-2. Hope reached his hundred off the final ball, and the decider is in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Hyderabad, India: Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl. By the time the West Indies innings ended, that decision looked costly, and the evening at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium only got harder for the home side.
Hope’s hundred, delivered on the last ball
West Indies finished on 247 for 3, and the innings was built around their captain. Shai Hope made an unbeaten 102 off 50 balls with four fours and nine sixes, and he reached three figures with a six off the final delivery. It was the second time in this series he had passed 100 in a T20I, after the unbeaten 102 that won the record chase in Ranchi.
Sherfane Rutherford stayed unbeaten on 49 off 26 balls and Shimron Hetmyer added a rapid 33 off 12, which left India chasing 248.
Paul turns the chase
India began quickly, and Sanju Samson made a fluent 56. Then Keemo Paul struck. He dismissed Samson and Ishan Kishan in the same over, and from there the chase never recovered its rhythm. Tilak Varma made 43 and Nitish Kumar Reddy hit 41 off 20 balls to briefly revive it, but Paul kept removing the batters India needed. He finished with 5 for 41.
India ended on 223 for 9 after 19.3 overs. Arshdeep Singh, the last man in, was hit by a short ball on his left arm in the closing stages and retired hurt, which brought the innings to a close. The extent of the injury has not been confirmed.
Everything on Bengaluru
The result levels the five-match series at 2-2. India had gone 2-1 up with a 14-run win in Indore, and the deciding match is at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, October 17. The squad will first travel to New Delhi for the Asian Games felicitation that forced the BCCI to postpone its IPL stakeholders meeting.
