Lancashire have decided not to offer James Anderson a contract for the 2027 season, according to reports. The 44-year-old, England’s leading Test wicket-taker, took 50 Championship wickets this summer. Neither side has issued a formal statement, and whether he plays on elsewhere or retires is unresolved.
Manchester, England: A 25-year association between James Anderson and Lancashire appears to be at an end. The county has decided not to offer the 44-year-old a new deal for 2027, according to reports, even though he finished the season among the leading wicket-takers in the Championship’s second division.
A decision from the new regime
The call is understood to have been made by Lancashire’s new leadership. Richard Kenyon has taken over as chief executive and Paul Farbrace has been appointed director of cricket, and reports say Anderson does not feature in their plans for a rebuild. Lancashire have declined to comment, and no formal statement has come from the club or the bowler.
The timing is striking, because Anderson’s form gave little sign of decline. He captained Lancashire in Division Two this summer and took 50 wickets at an average of 17.68 in 11 matches, despite managing a calf problem. The county still finished second from bottom of the table.
A record that still stands
Anderson’s career numbers explain why his position at the club mattered. He took 704 wickets in 188 Tests, the most by any fast bowler and an England record, and finished with 1,193 first-class wickets. His final Test was against West Indies at Lord’s in July 2024, but he carried on in county cricket on season-by-season deals with Lancashire.
What happens next
Anderson’s future is, for now, an open question. He could look for another county or an overseas opportunity, or he could step away from playing altogether; nothing has been confirmed. Lancashire have not yet named a captain for 2027.
Any announcement from Anderson, or a formal statement from Lancashire, will be the next piece of news to watch.
