Shafali hits 53 as India survive Bangladesh scare

Shafali Verma hit an attacking half-century as India beat a spirited Bangladesh side by 5 wickets to stay in the hunt for a Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal spot.

India walked away with two crucial points. They will know, however, that sterner tests await if they continue to offer opponents so many chances.

For a side chasing a semifinal berth, India could scarcely have made a more untidy start.

Bangladesh, invited to bat at Old Trafford, were repeatedly reprieved as India’s fielders endured a forgettable afternoon. Four catches went dropped inside the first six overs alone, allowing Bangladesh to recover from early setbacks to build partnerships that kept India under pressure throughout the innings.

The missed opportunities threatened to prove costly. Bangladesh, buoyed by the reprieves, showed admirable intent and composure, refusing to be overwhelmed by the occasion. Nigar Sultana and the middle order ensured that Bangladesh remained in the contest despite India’s disciplined bowling in patches. They rotated strike smartly and capitalised on India’s lapses to post a competitive 136 for 8 from their 20 overs.

Bowlers Compensate for Misfields

Fortunately for India, their bowlers once again found a way to compensate for the shortcomings in the field. Left-arm spinner Shree Charani continued her impressive tournament, striking at key moments and further strengthening her reputation as one of the breakout stars of the World Cup. Radha Yadav also chipped in with crucial wickets as India prevented Bangladesh from breaking free in the closing overs.

Shafali Verma Continues Golden Run

If India’s fielding lacked sharpness, Shafali Verma ensured their chase began with purpose.

The opener immediately put Bangladesh under pressure, unleashing a flurry of boundaries during the powerplay. Her aggressive approach prevented the required rate from climbing and shifted the momentum decisively in India’s favour. Shafali’s 53 from just 34 deliveries, laced with crisp strokeplay and fearless intent, laid the foundation for the chase and also took her past the 500-run mark in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Yet Bangladesh refused to fade away.

Regular wickets in the middle overs briefly reopened the contest, exposing India’s familiar vulnerability against spin. But with the chase threatening to drift, India’s lower middle order held its nerve, steering the side home with 19 balls to spare and sealing a five-wicket victory.

The result keeps India’s semifinal aspirations in their own hands in an increasingly tight Group 1 race. However, while the points were priceless, the performance left plenty for Harmanpreet Kaur’s side to ponder.

Against stronger opposition, such generosity in the field may not be forgiven.

Bangladesh Women 136/8 (20 overs) lost to India Women 139/5 (16.5 overs) by five wickets.

Player of the Match: Shafali Verma (India) – 53 (34)
