O’Shea’s stoppage-time header completes Ipswich’s late comeback and leaves Arbeloa’s Fulham winless

Ipswich came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 at Portman Road, with Abdoul Ouattara equalising from 30 yards in the 88th minute and Dara O’Shea heading the winner in stoppage time. Fulham remain winless under Álvaro Arbeloa, with two points from six games.

Ipswich, England: For 87 minutes Fulham were heading for the result that Álvaro Arbeloa has been waiting for since he took charge: a first Premier League win. Then Ipswich, who had spent the afternoon hitting the woodwork and shouting for penalties, scored twice in the space of a few minutes and took it away.

Sessegnon gives Fulham the lead

The first half finished goalless, with chances at both ends. David Affengruber headed over from an Alex Iwobi cross in the 22nd minute, and Julio Enciso curled wide for the home side. In the 55th minute Fulham broke through. From a corner, Ryan Sessegnon controlled Issa Diop’s clearance and drove a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner.

Ipswich had their share of frustrations. Emersonn hit a post from six yards and Oscar Bobb blazed over. Gonzalo García’s shot was blocked on the line by Diop’s arm, but the arm was ruled to be in a natural position, so there was no penalty. A claim for a penalty when Daizen Maeda went down under Sessegnon’s challenge was rejected by referee Lewis Smith and VAR around the 75th minute.

Two goals in three minutes

The turnaround came from distance. In the 88th minute Ouattara struck a 30-yard shot into the bottom corner, and the Portman Road crowd had a reason to believe again. The second goal followed almost at once. Jack Clarke swung in a free-kick in the first minute of stoppage time, and O’Shea rose to head it in.

A late scare and a long afternoon for Arbeloa

Fulham pushed for an equaliser in the closing moments, but Christian Walton denied Kevin in stoppage time to protect the lead. Earlier the Ipswich goalkeeper had pushed over a Sander Berge effort, and at the other end Bernd Leno had stopped Sindre Walle Egeli.

The result gave Gary O’Neil’s side their third league win of the season and lifted them to ninth. It left Fulham in the relegation zone, seven points behind Ipswich, and Arbeloa still waiting for a first league win in charge after six matches. Ipswich had suffered a 5-2 defeat at Old Trafford at the end of August.
