Arthur Gea beat 13th seed Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4 in the Shanghai Masters fourth round on Tuesday to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. The Frenchman, playing the event for the first time, moves into the top 50 for the first time and next meets Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Shanghai, China: Arthur Gea began the season ranked 241st. On Tuesday he stood one win from a Masters 1000 semi-final, on his debut at this level, after beating Jakub Mensik in one hour and 37 minutes.
A tie-break that started 0-3
The first set went to a tie-break, and Gea trailed 0-3 in it. He won seven of the last eight points to take it 7-4, a run that settled the set. Mensik hit 26 winners to Gea’s 21 over the match but never converted a break point.
Gea’s serve held the match together. He won 39 of 49 first-serve points, 80 per cent, and hit 11 aces to Mensik’s six. In the second set he saved a break point while serving for the match at 5-4 and closed it out to book his place in the last eight.
From No. 241 to the top 50
The win lifts the 21-year-old 12 places to No. 44 in the live rankings, which guarantees his top-50 debut when the new list appears on Monday. It also extends a run that began with his first ATP Tour title at Los Cabos earlier this season. In Shanghai he has now beaten two seeds: on Sunday he had knocked out third seed Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3) for the first top-10 win of his career. Against top-20 opposition he is now 4-1, according to the ATP.
Davidovich Fokina next
Gea’s quarter-final opponent is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who came back from a set down to beat Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Hurkacz, the 2023 champion in Shanghai, had earlier ended Novak Djokovic’s run in the second round.
It has been a week of upsets in Shanghai. Earlier in the tournament Zizou Bergs beat Carlos Alcaraz, and Gea’s run through the seeds is the latest result to rewrite the draw.
