Top seed Alexander Zverev beat Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 in the Shanghai Masters third round on Sunday, his 60th tour-level win of 2026. The result sets up a last-16 meeting with Alexander Bublik and keeps the German on course to secure the ATP year-end No. 1.
Shanghai, China: Alexander Zverev held two match points in the second-set tie-break, and Quentin Halys saved both. The Frenchman then finished the tie-break with an overhead volley winner, forcing a decider that Zverev had hoped to avoid.
A decider settled by an early break
Zverev answered quickly. He broke Halys in the Frenchman’s first service game of the third set, the same early pressure that had decided the opener, and never allowed him back into the contest. The match lasted two hours and 17 minutes, and Zverev did not face a single break point from start to finish.
Halys, the opponent who keeps asking questions
The scoreline hid how awkward this opponent has been. Halys took Zverev to four sets at Roland Garros and to five at the US Open, and Sunday’s win stretched Zverev’s record against him to 4-0, with all four meetings coming this season.
The year-end No. 1 equation
The 60th win of the year matters beyond the draw. It is the third time Zverev has reached 60 wins in a season, after 2018 and 2024, and it arrives in a campaign that has brought him the Roland Garros and US Open titles and a place in the Wimbledon final, where Jannik Sinner beat him.
Sinner has since ended his season with a knee injury, which is why the year-end race has opened for Zverev. He leads the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, and the ATP’s own projection says he clinches the year-end No. 1 by reaching the Shanghai semi-finals. A second route also exists if both Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton lose at some point during the week. Shelton, the third seed, went out on Sunday, beaten 7-6(5), 7-6(3) by Arthur Gea.
Zverev has never won in Shanghai. His best result here is a runner-up finish in 2019, and a deep run this week would change that story and the rankings picture together.
Bublik awaits
Next up is Bublik, who beat Brandon Nakashima 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5) earlier on Sunday. A win would put Zverev into the quarter-finals, one more victory from the semi-final threshold that decides the year-end honour.
Result: Alexander Zverev (GER, 1) bt Quentin Halys (FRA) 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3. Shanghai Masters (ATP Masters 1000), third round, Sunday, 11 October 2026.
Next: Zverev v Alexander Bublik (KAZ, 19) in the fourth round.
