India’s fourth day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games was their busiest yet — athletics finally opened at Scotstoun Stadium as Murali Sreeshankar and Gurindervir Singh stepped out for India, while Protistha Samanta carried the gymnastics dream into the vault final and Bindyarani Devi arrived at the SEC Armadillo with a point to prove in the women’s 58kg weightlifting final.
Glasgow, Scotland: After three days building the foundation — Jhandu Kumar’s bronze in para powerlifting, Mirabai Chanu’s history-making gold, silvers for Rishikanta Singh and Muthupandi Raja — India reached the day they had circled longest on the calendar. Monday brought the track and field guns to life at Scotstoun Stadium, with a full day of weightlifting finals, a gymnastics medal event, four boxing round of 16 bouts and a para athletics programme running deep into the night. India arrived at Day 4 with four medals and the conviction that this was where the tally would truly swell.
The Track Wakes Up
The afternoon air at Scotstoun had a different energy to the indoor halls that had defined India’s Glasgow campaign thus far. Murali Sreeshankar — silver medallist at Birmingham 2022 and the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games long jump medal — took to the runway in the men’s long jump qualifying alongside Lokesh Satyanathan, with both athletes chasing automatic qualification marks to advance to the final. The 2022 edition had ended with Sreeshankar’s legendary 8.08m effort; Glasgow begins a fresh chapter, with the 25-year-old carrying both expectation and the confidence of a seasoned campaigner.

Gurindervir Singh led India’s sprint charge in the men’s 100m heats, seeking to replicate his recent national circuit form on the Commonwealth stage. Tejas Shirse entered the 110m hurdles heats later in the afternoon, while Sajan Prakash’s bid in the men’s 200m butterfly heats in the pool ran parallel — the veteran swimmer looking to keep India’s swimming campaign alive ahead of the final.
Protistha’s Night
Of all the individual medal events on India’s Day 4 card, none captured the imagination quite like Protistha Samanta’s women’s vault final. The young gymnast had qualified third-fastest despite competing with a heavily strapped leg in Saturday’s team final — a performance that turned heads and signalled both her ability and her resilience. Glasgow’s Arena gave her the stage she earned. In a discipline where the margins between medals are measured in tenths of a point, Protistha’s technical precision and competitive poise would determine whether India’s gymnastics programme ends the Glasgow Games with its first-ever Commonwealth Games apparatus medal.
Gyaneshwari and Bindyarani: The Barbell Shift
India’s weightlifting camp rolled seamlessly into Day 4. Gyaneshwari Yadav opened the evening’s medal events at the SEC Armadillo in the women’s 53kg final — a category in which India has previously produced podium performers at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, where Yadav herself won gold. The 23-year-old carries the form and the composure for a medal run in Glasgow.
Bindyarani Devi arrived later in the night for the women’s 58kg final — and this was the performance India most anticipated from the weightlifting programme after Mirabai’s gold on Sunday. The Manipur lifter had won silver at Birmingham 2022 in the 55kg category with a Commonwealth Games record clean and jerk. Upgraded to 58kg in Glasgow, she brought a personal-best total of 206kg from the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, and the competitive instincts that have defined her since she first picked up a barbell in Imphal. Valluri Ajaya Babu rounded out India’s barbell schedule in the men’s 79kg final, adding a third simultaneous medal opportunity to an already charged day.
Siwach Steps Up
Sachin Siwach — who won his round of 32 bout 4-1 on Saturday — returned to the ring for the men’s 60kg round of 16 against England’s William Hewitt. A home crowd in British territory often stirs the soul of an English boxer; Siwach had the credentials to quiet that atmosphere. The former Commonwealth Youth Games champion has been one of India’s most technically composed boxers in the ring at Glasgow, and a victory here would move him into the quarterfinals and confirm a medal for the Indian boxing contingent. Ankush (men’s 80kg), Sakshi Choudhary (women’s 51kg) and Sumit Kundu (men’s 70kg) also entered the ring in round of 16 action during the day.
Putul, the Bowls, and Para Athletics
On the greens, Putul Sonowal returned for men’s singles sectional play against Kenya’s Anwar Hamada — a must-win tie to keep his campaign on course after Sunday’s defeat to Malaysia. The Assam native remains one of India’s wildcard medal hopes, and his ability to read the jack and adjust line under pressure has been the hallmark of his Glasgow campaign.

Late in the night, the para athletics programme delivered India’s medal chances in the women’s shot put F57 final, where Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa K Shyla contested for podium honours. Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi also competed in the men’s 100m T38 final. India’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team — bouncing back from their 1-16 opening loss to Wales — faced Nigeria in the second group game, looking for their first points on the board at these Games.
