Henderson scores twice and sets up another as Chelsea hit Bournemouth for five

Chelsea beat Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge as Jordan Henderson scored twice and set up Morgan Rogers, with João Pedro adding a brace of his own. Chelsea led 2-0 inside four minutes and ended a run of three Premier League games without a win.

London, England: Chelsea came into Saturday’s game with three winless league matches behind them, and Bournemouth were still hunting a first league victory of the season. Xabi Alonso’s side answered both problems at once, going two goals up inside four minutes.

Two goals in under four minutes

Henderson opened the scoring inside the first two minutes, finishing a pass from Cole Palmer after the attacker’s run. Shortly afterwards Rogers made it two, curling a shot that took a deflection off António Silva on its way in, with Henderson supplying the pass.

They did create chances before the break, but Emiliano Martínez stood in the way. He denied Rayan one-on-one and then smothered the follow-up from Ryan Christie, keeping the score at 2-0 at half-time.

Pedro turns two into three

The third came almost as soon as the second half began. Pedro Neto got to the byline after a slip from Silva and pulled the ball back, and João Pedro side-footed it in to make it 3-0 in the 46th minute.

Bournemouth found a way back into the match five minutes later, though it owed plenty to fortune. From a corner, Moisés Caicedo’s attempted clearance struck Evanilson and went into the net, and the visitors had a goal to show for their efforts.

Henderson puts the finish on it

Chelsea restored the margin in the 67th minute. Pep Chavarría crossed from the left after a pass from Rogers, and João Pedro tapped in his second. Three minutes later came the goal that decided where the headlines would go. Chelsea won a free-kick outside the box, and Henderson bent it over the wall and into the top corner for his second of the afternoon.

Henderson finished with two goals and an assist, the standout contribution on a day when Chelsea scored five.

What it changes

The win ended a run of three Premier League games without a victory for Chelsea, and it came a little over six weeks after Alonso’s reign began with a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage. Chavarría, signed from Rayo Vallecano in the summer, supplied the cross for Pedro’s second. For Bournemouth the afternoon extended a winless start to the league campaign.
