Chelsea have signed left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, closing out a deal reported at €25 million (£21.4 million) plus bonuses to replace Marc Cucurella following his £51.8 million move to Real Madrid. The 28-year-old, who helped Rayo reach last season’s Conference League final, has put pen to paper on a contract until 2031, choosing Chelsea over interest from Bayer Leverkusen to work under fellow Spaniard Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea were without a senior natural left-back beyond Jorrel Hato once Cucurella completed his switch to Real Madrid. Academy prospect Landon Emenalo had filled in there during pre-season, but Alonso’s system demanded a specialist, and he found one in a player who had just taken Rayo Vallecano to a European final.
The fee itself became a story in its own right. The reported figure of €25 million makes Chavarria the most expensive sale in Rayo Vallecano’s history — a striking marker for a club that finished eighth in La Liga for the second season running.
A release clause that never needed testing
Rayo Vallecano had set Chavarria’s release clause at €50 million (£42.8 million), more than double the fee Chelsea are reported to have paid.
Bayer Leverkusen had also shown interest, but Chavarria’s preference for the Premier League — and specifically for working under Alonso.
Built for Alonso’s back three
Chavarria’s suitability to Alonso’s preferred 3-4-3 formation was central to Chelsea’s pursuit. As a left-back capable of pushing into a wing-back role, he fits the profile Alonso needs to stretch play in a back three rather than a conventional back four. His performances for Rayo Vallecano last season, which included the run to the Conference League final, demonstrated that capacity at a club competing well above its league position would suggest.

Chavarria’s move makes him one of eight new arrivals under Alonso this offseason, joining defenders Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda, midfielders Morgan Rogers, Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco, and striker Danny Welbeck. The scale of that rebuild signals a squad being reshaped specifically around Alonso’s tactical demands rather than incremental reinforcement.
Chavarria made his own priorities clear on completing the move. “This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said. “It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.”
What Rayo Vallecano lose
For Rayo Vallecano, the sale closes the book on a player who was central to the best two-year spell in the club’s recent history — back-to-back eighth-place finishes in La Liga and a run to a Conference League final. Losing Chavarria for a fee well below his release clause will sting, even as the deal stands as the biggest sale the club has made.
Chelsea now head into the season with their left-back position resolved, Hato and Chavarria offering Alonso two senior options either side of Emenalo’s continued development. How quickly Chavarria adapts to Premier League intensity, after two seasons shaping his football around a Rayo side built to punch above its league position, will be one of the first tactical tests of Alonso’s rebuilt back line when competitive fixtures begin.
