Ten-man Beşiktaş drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace in the Europa League after Junior Olaitan’s long-range equaliser cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal. Ümit Akdağ was sent off four minutes later, but the hosts held on to stay unbeaten in the league phase.
Istanbul, Turkey: Beşiktaş trailed, drew level and then lost a player, and still came away from a frantic night at the Tüpraş Stadium with a point. Crystal Palace, who had a goal ruled out early on, could not turn a slender lead into a win.
Ndidi breaks the deadlock
Mateta had the ball in the net early on, but the goal was disallowed, and the match stayed goalless until the end of the first half. In first-half stoppage time Salih Özcan played a long ball over the Palace defence, Wilfred Ndidi controlled it and finished with his left foot into the far corner from the left of the area. Beşiktaş led 1-0 at the break.
Palace turn it around
The lead did not last long after the restart. Anan Khalaili crossed from the right and Yéremy Pino finished from close range, with VAR confirming the equaliser.
Palace went in front in the 55th minute. Mateta intercepted a loose back pass from Tiago Djalo, ran into the area and beat the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. It was a punishing error from a Beşiktaş side that had started the evening with two wins from two.
Olaitan’s strike, Akdağ’s red
Beşiktaş responded in the 73rd minute. Olaitan took the ball outside the box, went past two defenders and drove a shot into the goal to make it 2-2.
The momentum shifted again four minutes later. Akdağ, who had been booked earlier in the half, was sent off in the 77th minute for a late challenge on Jørgen Strand Larsen as Palace broke. Beşiktaş held on to the point with ten men.
What it leaves behind
The draw took Beşiktaş to seven points from three games. Palace arrived on the back of two straight defeats: they had lost 3-2 to Lyon in the Europa League and then 5-0 at Brighton in the Premier League. A point in Istanbul stops the slide.
