Chase’s three-wicket burst leaves Bangladesh 79 for 6 and 106 ahead after Nayeem Hasan bowls West Indies out for 245 on Day 3 in Mirpur

Roston Chase took three wickets in quick succession as Bangladesh slipped to 79/6 in their second innings, still 106 ahead at the close of Day 3 in Mirpur, after Nayeem Hasan’s 4-33 had bowled West Indies out for 245 to leave them 27 behind.

Mirpur, Bangladesh: A first Test that began with Bangladesh in control has become a contest. Bad light ended Friday’s play early, leaving Bangladesh ahead by 106 with six wickets down and a concussion substitute at the crease.

West Indies fall 27 short

West Indies resumed on 134/4 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Justin Greaves added 65 for the fifth wicket before Shoriful Islam broke the stand. Chanderpaul’s 56 was the innings’ top score. Nayeem Hasan then trapped Greaves lbw for 46 shortly before lunch to leave West Indies 213/6.

Captain Roston Chase held the lower order together, surviving a dropped chance on 27 and finishing unbeaten on 43. Joshua Bishop was also dropped on 11 by Mominul Haque, who suffered a concussion attempting the catch. Jaker Ali came on as his concussion substitute, and Bishop was later stumped off Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Nayeem finished with 4-33 as West Indies were bowled out for 245, 27 behind Bangladesh’s 272, which Jomel Warrican’s five-for had wrapped up on Day 2.

Chase turns the match around

Bangladesh’s second innings began badly. Joseph dismissed Tanzid Hasan for a duck in the second over, and then Chase took over. He bowled Shadman Islam for 13, removed Towhid Hridoy for a duck two balls later and trapped Najmul Hossain Shanto lbw for 10 in his next over, leaving Bangladesh 33/4.

Warrican struck after the break, trapping Litton Das lbw and bowling Mehidy Hasan Miraz to make it 53/6. Jaker Ali and Nayeem Hasan, both 18 not out, steadied matters with a stand that reached 26 before the light closed in.
