Jomel Warrican took 5 for 53 as Bangladesh lost their last seven wickets for 59 to finish on 272 despite Shadman Islam’s 105, then Taijul Islam struck twice in an over to leave West Indies on 134 for 4, still 138 behind, when bad light ended Day 2 in Mirpur.
Dhaka, Bangladesh: The first Test turned twice on Thursday, and the second turn came only after rain and fading light had interrupted the afternoon. Bangladesh, who had ended Day 1 on 213 for 3 with Shadman Islam stranded on 99, resumed in control and lost it inside a morning session. They were bowled out in 97.4 overs, and play ended at 4:35pm with only 71.4 overs bowled in the day.
A hundred, then a collapse
Shadman reached his century off 220 balls in the first over of the day, the third Test hundred of his career. Joshua Bishop, a debutant spinner, then had him lbw a short time later for 105 off 234 balls, with 11 fours. It was Bishop’s first Test wicket, and Bangladesh were 221 for 4.
What followed was a slide. Bishop bowled Towhid Hridoy for 42 with the batter slogging across the line. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had added 32 with Litton Das, was bowled by Warrican for 15 when he missed a straight ball. Shamar Joseph removed Nayeem Hasan and Hasan Mahmud, and Warrican finished the innings by dismissing Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam. The last five wickets fell for 19, and Litton was left unbeaten on 34.
Warrican’s figures were 5 for 53 in 23.4 overs. Bishop and Joseph took two wickets each, and Jayden Seales one.
Campbell sets the pace, Taijul turns it
West Indies started with a 29-run opening stand before Hasan Mahmud had Brandon King caught behind for 15, the catch taken by substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali. Litton had been hurt while batting and did not take the field.
John Campbell, dropped on 5 and 22, reached his sixth Test fifty in 61 balls with a mix of boundaries and sixes, and he was on 53 off 65 balls when bad light forced an early tea at 2pm with the score at 89 for 1. He added one more run before Mehidy had him caught at slip by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 54, with West Indies on 95.
Taijul then took two wickets in one over. Kavem Hodge was caught at silly point for 7, and Amir Jangoo holed out to Tanzid Hasan off a slog sweep, leaving West Indies on 97 for 4.
Chanderpaul and Greaves hold on
Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Justin Greaves steadied the innings with an unbroken stand of 37. Chanderpaul was on 43 and Greaves on 15 when rain, a wet outfield and fading light brought play to a close. West Indies resume on Day 3 with six wickets in hand, 138 runs behind.
