Manvir Singh scored in the 85th minute from Liston Colaço’s cross to give Mohun Bagan Super Giant a 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League in Kolkata, after both goalkeepers had kept the match goalless for 84 minutes.
Kolkata, India: For 84 minutes, Mohun Bagan Super Giant ran into a wall of gloves and woodwork. Then Liston Colaço, on as a late substitute, delivered a cross, and Manvir Singh turned it in from close range to settle the Indian Super League match against Chennaiyin FC on Monday.
Goalkeepers hold firm
Neither side scored before half-time, and both goalkeepers earned their place in the report. Chennaiyin’s best moments came through Nikola Stojanović, whose left-footed effort, set up by S Prakadeswaran, hit the crossbar, and through Brison Fernandes and Irfan Yadwad, who also had attempts. Vishal Kaith made several saves for Mohun Bagan to keep the game level.
At the other end, Mohammad Nawaz was equally busy. He saved Samir Zeljković’s effort, and he kept out attempts from Lee Erwin and Manvir. Alberto Rodríguez missed from close range after a corner, a chance Mohun Bagan would have wanted back. Substitutions followed, with Sahal Abdul Samad on for Lallianzuala Chhangte at the start of the second half and Anirudh Thapa replacing Zeljković.
Colaço and Manvir settle it
With the clock running down, Mohun Bagan sent on Colaço and Abhishek Suryavanshi for Deepak Tangri and Dejan Draxic. The change worked. In the 85th minute Colaço put the ball into the box, and Manvir finished from close range for the only goal of the night.
Where it leaves Bagan
The win comes after a 1-0 defeat at NorthEast United and a 2-1 comeback win over SC Delhi earlier in the campaign. It was Mohun Bagan’s second win of the season. Chennaiyin leave Kolkata with nothing to show for their effort.
