Diomande’s volley seals Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Leipzig as Mbappé and Güler also score

Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Bernabéu to make it three wins from three in the Champions League. Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande scored, with Diomande’s late volley the pick of the goals against his former club.

Madrid, Spain: Leipzig arrived at the Bernabéu after a 6-1 defeat at Bayern Munich. They left with another defeat, one that Real Madrid controlled until three goals in five minutes at the end gave the scoreline its final shape.

Silva pounces before the break

The opening goal came just before half-time. Güler’s shot was saved by Leipzig goalkeeper Vandevoordt, and Bernardo Silva followed up to score from the rebound in the 44th minute. Thibaut Courtois had kept the game level moments earlier by denying Christopher Nkunku.

Güler and Mbappé turn the screw

Seven minutes after the restart, Mbappé won a header in the box and the ball fell for Güler, who finished from close range to make it 2-0. The third arrived in the 83rd minute, when Diomande set up Mbappé and he struck from the edge of the area into the top corner.

Leipzig reply, Diomande answers

Leipzig responded within two minutes. Tidiam Gomis, a substitute, finished a quick counter-attack in the 85th minute to make it 3-1. Real Madrid had the answer almost immediately. In the 87th minute Brahim Díaz fed Diomande, who volleyed into the top corner against his former club.

The result keeps Madrid unbeaten in the competition after they came from 3-1 down to beat Roma 4-3 last time out. Attention now turns to the Clásico, which Barcelona will approach without the injured Dani Olmo.

Result: Real Madrid 4, RB Leipzig 1 (UEFA Champions League league phase, Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid). Real Madrid: Bernardo Silva (44′), Arda Güler (52′), Kylian Mbappé (83′), Yan Diomande (87′). Leipzig: Tidiam Gomis (85′).
