Meanwhile, Celta Vigo’s opener against Osasuna has been postponed to August 27 after a fungus outbreak left the Balaidos pitch unfit for play — a decision that has already sparked a dispute between the two clubs over scheduling.
A fungus got there before the footballers. Celta Vigo’s opening fixture of the 2026-27 La Liga season — originally scheduled for Sunday, August 16 against Osasuna — has been postponed after an outbreak of fungus rendered the Estadio de Balaidos pitch unfit for professional football. It is, in the words of one Spanish outlet, the strangest story of La Liga’s opening weekend, and it has already caused a diplomatic spat between the two clubs before a ball has been kicked.
Vigo, Spain: La Liga confirmed on Thursday that Sunday’s fixture between Celta Vigo and Osasuna would be postponed “because of an illness that has affected the stadium’s pitch” — official language for what club sources described more plainly as a fungal outbreak that had spread across the Balaidos playing surface in recent weeks. League inspectors visited the stadium on Wednesday to assess the damage, following an earlier inspection the previous week that had, at the time, validated the ground as fit for play.
Celta explained that weather conditions in the days since had undone that earlier assessment. “The recent weather conditions have adversely affected the pitch’s progress and led to the decision to postpone the match,” the club said in a statement, adding that a technical inspection the previous week had confirmed the surface met required safety and quality standards before deteriorating. The match will now be played on Thursday, August 27 — though the exact kickoff time has been reported inconsistently across sources, with some citing 19:30 local and others 20:30 local.
Osasuna’s Fury
Not everyone at the Estadio de Balaidos was satisfied with how the situation was handled. Osasuna released their own statement expressing frustration not with the postponement itself — which they said they understood, given the genuine unsafety of the pitch — but with the process that followed. The Navarrese club said both sides had already agreed an alternative date of either September 24 or 25, during an international break, that would have avoided disrupting either team’s early-season rhythm and allowed for proper recovery time.

“However, neither La Liga nor the RFEF accepted the clubs’ request and unilaterally decided the match will be played Aug. 27,” Osasuna said in their statement. “In short, the team most affected by the initial postponement for reasons beyond its control is again the most affected by the new schedule.” The club noted that both La Liga and the Spanish federation had been aware of the agreement the two clubs reached, and expressed dismay that it was overridden regardless.
The saga adds an unwanted subplot to a stadium already undergoing long-term redevelopment as a prospective host venue for the 2030 World Cup — renovation work that will eventually expand Balaidos’ capacity from its current 24,870 to somewhere between 40,000 and 44,000 seats. For now, the priority is simpler: getting the surface playable again.
The Season Begins Anyway — Staggered by World Cup Recovery
Celta and Osasuna’s absence leaves a gap in what was already going to be an unusually staggered opening round. La Liga’s 2026-27 season kicks off on Saturday, August 15, but several of the division’s biggest clubs — those with players who progressed deep into the 2026 World Cup on North American soil during the summer — were given the option to push their opening fixtures back. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid all took up that option. Celta were entitled to the same postponement, given Borja Iglesias’ involvement in Spain’s World Cup triumph, but had elected not to exercise it — before the fungus outbreak forced their hand regardless, for entirely different reasons.
The opening round is spread across four days as a result, headlined not by the traditional giants but by Atlético Madrid, whose delayed fixture against Málaga will now be played on Wednesday, August 19.
Mourinho’s Return, Flick’s Threepeat Bid
The two storylines that will define the season begin properly once the postponed fixtures catch up. José Mourinho, in his second stint in charge of Real Madrid after previously managing the club between 2010 and 2013, leads Los Blancos into their opener at home to Real Sociedad. Real Madrid’s campaign closes, as it began, at home — against Deportivo La Coruña on the final weekend of May.
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona, chasing a third consecutive La Liga title and a 30th league championship overall, have not won three in a row since the Pep Guardiola era of 2008 to 2011. La Liga’s own predictive model gives them a 45.6% chance of completing the hat-trick, against a 31% chance for Mourinho’s Madrid. Camp Nou’s ongoing renovation continues to shape Barcelona’s early fixture list.
The two sides meet for the first Clásico of the campaign at Camp Nou on Sunday, October 25 — during matchday 10 — with the reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu scheduled for Sunday, May 9, potentially with the title still to be decided. The Madrid derby dates are also confirmed: Real Madrid travel to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on September 20, before hosting Atlético at the Bernabéu on April 4.
