Nick Woltemade holding the ball and celebrating after scoring a penalty for Juventus against Rennes in the Europa League

Juventus 2-2 Rennes: Woltemade’s penalty earns a point before VAR rules out Lucumí’s late goal

Juventus drew 2-2 with Rennes in the Europa League after Nick Woltemade’s second-half penalty answered Boulaye Dia’s spot-kick for the visitors. Jhon Lucumí’s late effort was ruled out for offside by VAR, leaving Luciano Spalletti’s unbeaten side with a point rather than a win.

Turin, Italy: Juventus scored after five minutes, trailed before the interval and needed a penalty of their own to finish level. The draw kept Spalletti’s side unbeaten in the league phase, but it left them knowing a winner had been taken away in the 88th minute.

Woltemade sets up the early lead

Juventus needed only five minutes. Woltemade slid a pass through the Rennes defence, Zeki Çelik ran onto it and finished across goalkeeper Brice Samba to make it 1-0.

Rennes answered ten minutes later. In the 15th minute Bryan Reynolds nodded a cross back across goal and Mousa Al-Taamari turned it in from close range, with Guglielmo Vicario beaten.

Handball swings the half

The visitors took the lead just before half-time. Douglas Luiz blocked a Rennes shot with his arm, and referee Morten Krogh pointed to the spot at once. Dia sent Vicario the wrong way from the penalty, and Rennes went in 2-1 ahead.

Juventus found their equaliser from the same source. Nico González’s header from a Douglas Luiz free kick struck Reynolds on the arm, and Krogh awarded another penalty. In the 67th minute Woltemade sent it down the middle to make it 2-2.

Lucumí denied by the offside flag

Juventus thought they had won it in the 88th minute. A deflected effort fell for Lucumí, who finished from close range, only for VAR to rule him offside, with Teun Koopmeiners’ initial flick the moment that counted. The goal was chalked off and the score stayed level.

What the point means

Juventus now have seven points from three games. They opened with a 5-0 win over NEC and followed it with a stoppage-time victory at Celta Vigo, where Woltemade also scored. Rennes leave Turin with a point after leading at the interval.
