Tresoldi’s hat-trick sinks Inter as Club Brugge win a seven-goal thriller at San Siro

Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick as Club Brugge beat Inter 4-3 at San Siro on Tuesday in a Champions League thriller. Lautaro Martínez struck twice for Inter, but Romeo Vermant’s 87th-minute goal proved decisive and left Inter without a point after two league-phase matches.

Milan, Italy: Club Brugge arrived at San Siro having lost their opening game and left with a win over one of the competition’s heavyweights. It took seven goals, a penalty and a late Inter scramble to get there.

A penalty and a quick reply

Brugge went ahead just before the half-hour. Tresoldi converted a penalty, awarded when Hakan Çalhanoğlu fouled Carlos Forbs, and placed it into the top corner. Inter answered before the break. Lautaro Martínez levelled in the 44th minute to send the sides in at 1-1.

Tresoldi takes over

The second half belonged to the Brugge striker. Just after the hour, Forbs pounced on a goalkeeping error and fed Tresoldi, who scored into an empty net. In the 74th minute Tresoldi completed his hat-trick, following up when Forbs’s shot was saved. Brugge led 3-1 with a quarter of an hour to play.

Inter’s late scramble

Inter did not go quietly. Lautaro Martínez scored his second from close range after a Petar Sučić effort was saved, making it 3-2 in the 81st minute. Brugge restored their two-goal cushion in the 87th, when Vermant lofted the ball over the goalkeeper. Ange-Yoan Bonny then cut inside and found the top corner in the third minute of stoppage time to make it 4-3, but there was no time left for a fourth Inter goal.

Two teams in need of points

The result leaves Inter with no points from two games, after a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid on matchday one, and a home match against Shakhtar Donetsk to come. Brugge, who lost 3-2 to Aston Villa in their opener, collect their first points and host Lens next. Inter were among the top seeds in the league-phase draw, while Brugge came from the second pot, and the seeding counted for little on the night.

Result: Inter 3-4 Club Brugge (half-time 1-1)

Scorers: Inter: Lautaro Martínez 44′, 81′, Ange-Yoan Bonny 90+3′. Club Brugge: Nicolò Tresoldi 29′ (pen), 63′, 74′, Romeo Vermant 87′
