Gill and Iyer to share India’s ODI captaincy in New Zealand as Akash Deep returns for the Tests

The BCCI has named split-captaincy squads for India’s five ODIs and two Tests in New Zealand. Shubman Gill leads the first three one-day games and Shreyas Iyer the last two, while Gill captains the Test side with KL Rahul as vice-captain and Akash Deep returns.

Mumbai, India: Shubman Gill will lead India for only part of the one-day series in New Zealand. The BCCI announced the squads for the tour on Friday evening, and the central decision is a deliberate handover in the middle of the ODIs so that Gill, who will also captain the Test side, can leave to prepare for the red-ball games.

Gill first, then Iyer

Gill captains the opening three ODIs, in Auckland on 4 November, Wellington on 7 November and Hamilton on 10 November, with Iyer as his deputy. Iyer then takes charge for the fourth and fifth matches in Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November, with Ishan Kishan as vice-captain. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in both ODI squads, as are Ishan Kishan and Naman Dhir, who hit 30 off 10 balls and 24 not out off six respectively in Saturday’s rain-hit T20I in Bengaluru.

The second squad is a different group. Gill and Rahul are rested for the last two matches, as are Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna. Tilak Varma, who last played 50-over cricket in December 2025, comes back, and Auqib Nabi, Yash Thakur and wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra are added. Kushagra receives his first India call-up. Prasidh’s place in the first squad depends on a fitness clearance.

Who is missing

Jasprit Bumrah is rested from the ODIs but is named for the Tests, and Ravindra Jadeja is also selected only for the red-ball games. Hardik Pandya is not part of the tour while he recovers from injury, and Mohammed Shami is not in any of the squads. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was added to the squad for Saturday’s fifth T20I against West Indies, is not in the touring groups.

The Test squad

Gill leads a 16-man Test group with Rahul as vice-captain. It also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Anshul Kamboj, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj, alongside Bumrah and Jadeja. Akash Deep returns after recovering from a lower-back stress fracture, and Pant’s inclusion is subject to fitness clearance as he recovers from a left rib injury.

It is a group that follows the Sri Lanka tour, where India crushed the hosts by 165 runs in Galle under Gill before drawing the second Test. The two-Test series in New Zealand begins in Wellington on 19 November.
