Pakistan and Wales shared a thrilling 3-3 draw, France and Malaysia fought out a 3-3 stalemate of their own, and Jakob Brilla’s 39th-minute penalty corner strike gave Germany a narrow 1-0 win over hosts Belgium in a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, headlining a dramatic Day 3 at the Hockey World Cup 2026.
Three matches, three contrasting stories, and not a single one settled comfortably. Pakistan let a late lead slip against Wales. France and Malaysia traded goals without ever finding daylight between them. And in a repeat of the 2023 final, Germany needed just one moment of quality from Jakob Brilla to see off hosts Belgium in a match that otherwise refused to open up. Day 3 of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 delivered drama across both Amstelveen and Wavre.
Amstelveen / Wavre: With India’s defeat to England dominating the headlines from Pool D, the day’s other three matches quietly delivered some of the tournament’s most entertaining hockey so far — full of momentum swings, late goals and honours shared.
Pakistan 3-3 Wales — A Six-Goal Pool D Thriller
Four-time champions Pakistan and World Cup debutants-turned-competitors Wales shared the points in a match that swung one way and then the other across all four quarters. Pakistan made the brighter start, going ahead through Abdul Rehman inside the first quarter as they looked composed in possession and dangerous whenever they attacked. Wales, still searching for their first points of the tournament after an opening defeat to India, struggled to find their rhythm early on.
The Welsh response came in the second quarter, as they clawed their way back into the contest and levelled the scores before the interval. Pakistan regrouped and produced a determined final-quarter surge to retake the lead, only for Wales — inspired by goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill, who has become something of a cult hero at successive World Cups for his shootout heroics — to find a stoppage-time equaliser and snatch a share of the spoils.

The 3-3 draw leaves both sides with a single point apiece, keeping Pakistan’s qualification hopes alive but adding pressure to their remaining Pool D fixtures, including a mouth-watering clash with arch-rivals India on August 19. For Wales, the point represents exactly the kind of result their part-time squad has been chasing since arriving in the Netherlands and Belgium. Reynolds-Cotterill, the Player of the Match, continued a tournament habit: he has now been central to some of Wales’s most memorable World Cup moments across successive editions.
France 3-3 Malaysia — Malaysia Bounce Back From the Germany Mauling
In Wavre, France and Malaysia produced an equally even contest, sharing six goals in a match that neither side could quite pull away from. Malaysia arrived off the back of a chastening 5-1 opening-day defeat to Germany, but showed considerably more resolve and cutting edge against France, matching their opponents goal for goal throughout.
Akhimullah Anuar was named Player of the Match for Malaysia and was honest in his post-match assessment of a result that could have been even better. “We got one point today, but unlucky — I think we should have got three points today,” he said. “We have played a very good game. We bounced back after we lost against Germany.”
For France, who had themselves lost narrowly to hosts Belgium on the opening day, the draw does little to ease the pressure in a Pool B that already looks stacked against them, with Germany and Belgium setting the pace at the top.
Germany 1-0 Belgium — Brilla Settles a Heavyweight Rematch
The day’s marquee fixture was saved for last: a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final between Germany and hosts Belgium, two sides who have developed one of the fiercest rivalries in the sport across the last three years, including a 5-4 shoot-out final in Bhubaneswar and a further meeting at the EuroHockey Championship 2025 final.

Belgium, the reigning world No. 1 and playing in front of their home fans at the Belfius Hockey Arena, dominated large stretches of the first half and did almost everything except find the net. But it was Germany, working with far fewer clear-cut chances, who made their first genuine opportunity count. Jakob Brilla — who had also scored in Germany’s opening-day rout of Malaysia — fired in from a penalty corner in the 39th minute to break the deadlock, and the defending champions held firm defensively for the remainder of the contest to close out a narrow but significant win.
The victory sends a clear signal at the top of Pool B: Germany finish the day on top of the group, with Belgium made to work for every point in a rivalry that shows no sign of settling down. Malaysia and France, level on a single point each from the draw in Wavre, now find themselves needing results against the group’s two heavyweights to keep their own qualification hopes alive.
