Tanvi Sharma and Treesa-Gayatri fall in Denmark Open quarter-finals as India’s campaign ends

India’s Denmark Open campaign ended in the quarter-finals in Odense on Friday. Tanvi Sharma lost 15-21, 13-21 to world No. 1 An Se-young, and Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand fell 21-14, 17-21, 11-21 to Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.

Odense, Denmark: India arrived at the quarter-finals with two women’s players still alive at the Super 750 event, and left without a semi-finalist. Both Friday matches began with promise. Neither ended the way the Indian camp wanted.

Tanvi pushed aside by An

Tanvi Sharma took on the world No. 1, An Se-young, and the first game was level at 9-9 before the Korean won four points in a row and pulled away to take it 21-15. The second game was tied at 5-5 until An reeled off eight straight points, and she closed it out 21-13 in 38 minutes. Tanvi had earned the date with An by beating Germany’s Yvonne Li in the previous round.

Treesa and Gayatri lose control

The women’s doubles pair started best of all. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand took the opening game 21-14 against the second-seeded Malaysians Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan. Then the match turned. Pearly and Thinaah won the second game 21-17 and the decider 21-11, ending the contest after 55 minutes. They lead the head-to-head 8-2 and are the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair in 18 years to reach the semi-finals in Denmark. They face China’s Bao Lijing and Cao Zihan next.

A week of early exits

The two defeats close an event that had been difficult for India from the start. Satwik-Chirag, Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda fell in the first round, and Kidambi Srikanth and Ashmita Chaliha went out in the round of 16 on Thursday, when Tanvi and Treesa-Gayatri reached the last eight.

For Treesa and Gayatri, the setback follows a high. The pair won historic bronze at the World Championships in New Delhi, India’s first medal in the discipline at that event.
