Chennai Super Kings have named Albie Morkel and Gareth Batty as assistant coaches and Mohit Sharma as bowling coach under new head coach Zaheer Khan, reshaping the backroom team that will work with the squad ahead of IPL 2027 and the December mini-auction.
The appointments, reported on 27 October, reshape the support staff around Zaheer, the former India fast bowler who was named CSK head coach on 21 September in place of Stephen Fleming. Fleming has moved on to England’s Test team.
The new faces
Morkel, the former South Africa all-rounder, knows the franchise well. He played for CSK from 2008 to 2013 and was part of the squads that won the IPL in 2010 and 2011. Batty, the former England off-spinner, joins from Surrey, where he had been head coach. Mohit Sharma, the former India fast bowler who also played for CSK, is the bowling coach.
Who stays and who goes
Fielding coach James Foster and assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram are retained. Batting coach Michael Hussey, bowling coach Eric Simons, strength and conditioning coach Greg King and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek are among those who have left.
A busy winter for IPL staffs
CSK are not the only franchise reshaping their coaching set-up for the new season. Delhi Capitals earlier named Sourav Ganguly head coach for IPL 2027. For CSK, the IPL 2027 mini-auction is due in December.
