Towhid Hridoy’s unbeaten 242 gives Bangladesh a 30-run lead over West Indies on Day 3 in Sylhet

Towhid Hridoy finished unbeaten on 242, the highest Test score by a Bangladesh batter, as Bangladesh recovered from 184 for 7 to reach 386 and a 30-run lead. West Indies were 7 without loss when bad light ended Day 3 in Sylhet.

Sylhet, Bangladesh: Bangladesh began Saturday at 88 for 3, still 268 runs behind. They finished it ahead in the second Test, and one innings made the difference. Towhid Hridoy batted through a middle-order slide and the whole tail to end unbeaten on 242, leaving a 30-run first-innings lead and a West Indies side with 23 to find before they can even draw level.

From 184 for 7 to a record

Jomel Warrican struck through the morning, removing Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das and Hasan Mahmud, and Bangladesh were 184 for 7 at one stage. Hridoy refused to follow them. He added 117 for the eighth wicket with Taijul Islam and 85 for the ninth with Taskin Ahmed, turning a collapse into a platform.

The highest score by a Bangladesh batter

Hridoy’s 242 came off 359 balls and passed Mushfiqur Rahim’s 219 against Zimbabwe in 2018 as the highest individual Test score for Bangladesh. Warrican finished with 4 for 104, and Jayden Seales ended the innings by dismissing Taskin for 12. Opener Shadman Islam, who hurt his ankle in the field on Day 2, did not bat.

Light closes the day

West Indies, who were bowled out for 356, had four overs at the crease before bad light stopped play early. They are 7 without loss, 23 behind. The visitors lead the two-match series 1-0 after their eight-wicket win in the first Test at Mirpur, and they had the better of Friday, as our Day 2 report explains. Day 4 will show whether Hridoy’s innings is enough to keep Bangladesh level in the series.

Close of play, Day 3: Bangladesh 386 in the first innings (Towhid Hridoy 242*; Jomel Warrican 4/104; Shadman Islam absent hurt). West Indies 356 and 7/0. Bangladesh lead the first innings by 30 runs; West Indies trail by 23.
