Arsenal have agreed a deal worth £75 million with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimarães, with the 28-year-old Brazil international signing a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium. The deal ends months of negotiations and lands Mikel Arteta his top midfield target of the summer.
London, England: Mikel Arteta has spoken all summer about adding quality and leadership to his midfield. On Tuesday evening, he got both in one signing. Arsenal and Newcastle United have reached an agreement for the transfer of Bruno Guimarães.
Guimarães has completed his Arsenal medical and signed a contract until 2031 — five years that cover what should be the peak of a career that has already made him one of the Premier League’s most complete central midfielders.
A Move Months in the Making
The story of how Arsenal finally signed Bruno Guimarães is, in truth, a story about a player who decided where he wanted to go and waited for his club to accept it. Guimarães had agreed personal terms with Arsenal weeks ago — the player-club agreement was the easy part. The fee negotiation was not.
Arsenal’s first bid — reportedly €70 million — was rejected. Their second, at €80 million, was also turned down before Arsenal ultimately raised their proposal to a base fee of €90 million plus bonuses to secure Newcastle’s agreement.
The tipping point came at Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain. Guimarães, who had delayed his arrival at the camp to allow negotiations to progress, flew out to join the squad on Monday — held discussions with club officials and new head coach Matthias Jaissle — and reiterated clearly that he wanted to leave. That conversation, reportedly, pushed both clubs towards a final agreement. Newcastle began identifying replacements. Arsenal prepared the medical schedule.
What Arteta Gets
At 28 years old and in the form of his career, Bruno Guimarães is precisely the player Arsenal’s midfield has needed since Martin Zubimendi’s arrival brought control but not the dynamism the Gunners occasionally lack. Guimarães joining does not mean Arsenal are selling Zubimendi. The two are expected to form a partnership that gives Arteta both defensive structure and the aggressive box-to-box energy Guimarães brings.

He arrived at Newcastle from Lyon for approximately €40 million (£35m) in January 2022 — a fee that now looks like one of the Premier League era’s great bargains. Lyon, who retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause on the profit from any future sale, will receive approximately £6-7 million from the Arsenal deal — a return on an investment they made in Guimarães when signing him from Athletico Paranaense for €20 million in 2020. He became Newcastle’s captain, their most important player and, after Eddie Howe’s departure following a turbulent summer of player sales, the last major figure from the team that had threatened Champions League football on Tyneside. His departure — following Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali’s £100 million switch to Tottenham — leaves Newcastle facing a significant rebuild under Jaissle.
For Arsenal, the signing represents a statement of intent from a club that finished second last season and is determined not to do so again.
The Norgaard Footnote
The Guimarães deal coincides with Arsenal reaching agreement in principle to sell Christian Norgaard to Everton for approximately £7 million — a departure that creates the squad space and, to some degree, the financial flexibility to absorb a signing of this scale. Norgaard, 31, had been a reliable squad contributor but his opportunities at Arsenal were always going to be limited with a younger, more dynamic midfielder incoming.
The wait, after a summer of bids and rejections and training ground conversations, is almost over.
