Ødegaard’s rebound goal sinks Hull 1-0 as Arsenal head into the international break on top

Martin Ødegaard scored from the rebound in the 72nd minute as Arsenal beat Hull City 1-0 at the Emirates after a VAR-cancelled penalty. Okafor’s late goal lifted Leeds past Tottenham, and Murphy and Muniz scored within three minutes at Fulham.

London, England: Arsenal won without fluency and without a second goal, but they won, and in a title race that is what Mikel Arteta’s side keep doing. Hull City defended deep and defended well for 71 minutes at the Emirates Stadium before Ødegaard picked up the pieces.

A penalty taken away

Arsenal dominated possession, around 67 per cent, and had 21 shots to Hull’s seven, yet the first half brought no goal. Kai Havertz missed a good chance created by Ødegaard. Later in the half Havertz went down in the box after Nobel Mendy pulled his shirt, and referee Farai Hallam awarded a penalty. VAR then intervened. Havertz had been offside earlier in the move, and the decision was overturned. Arteta said afterwards that the team did not have clarity on it.

Ødegaard follows up

Hull lost centre-back Semi Ajayi to injury in the second half, and Arsenal found the breakthrough soon after, in the 72nd minute. Noni Madueke’s shot inside the box forced a save from Konstantinos Tzolakis, the goalkeeper could only push it back into danger, and Ødegaard tapped in the rebound. Arteta had already changed the attack, sending on Viktor Gyökeres for Havertz and Mikel Merino for Declan Rice, and Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapié followed. Arsenal, who beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield last weekend and Slavia Prague in the Champions League in midweek, now top the table on 27 points from ten games going into the international break.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

At Elland Road, substitute Noah Okafor scored in the 79th minute to give Leeds United a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur and end a winless run. He finished into the corner with a powerful shot, and James Trafford twice denied Spurs, including a late save from a Jan Paul van Hecke header, to protect the lead. At Craven Cottage, Newcastle United looked set to leave with a point from Fulham when Jacob Murphy cut inside Calvin Bassey and curled a shot into the top corner in the 80th minute. Substitute Rodrigo Muniz levelled three minutes later from Cesar Palacios’s cross, and it finished 1-1.
