Gurnoor Brar took a career-best 4 for 30 as India bowled New Zealand out for 134, then won the rain-shortened second ODI in Wellington by four runs under DLS. India lead the five-match series 2-0.
Wellington, New Zealand: India needed 135 and never finished the chase. They did not have to. When rain stopped play with India on 113 for 7, they were four runs ahead of the DLS par score, and that was enough to take a 2-0 lead in the series from a match that had threatened to slip away after a top-order collapse.
Brar and the new-ball pair break New Zealand
India captain Shubman Gill chose to bowl after a rain delay, and New Zealand were bowled out for 134. Auqib Nabi removed both openers, Anshul Kamboj took two wickets, and Brar finished with 4 for 30 from his ten overs. Daryl Mitchell held the innings together with 55 off 104 balls, and he and Mitchell Santner added 59 for the sixth wicket. Santner made 31 off 38 before the innings closed.
A chase that wobbled
The reply started badly. Gill was out first ball to Jacob Duffy, and Virat Kohli fell for 7. Rohit Sharma made 23 and Shreyas Iyer 30 before Kyle Jamieson removed him, and Duffy and Jamieson finished with three wickets each. KL Rahul was unbeaten on 26 when the rain returned and the umpires called the match off.
What it means for the series
India are 2-0 up in the five-match series after winning the first ODI at Eden Park by five wickets, also under DLS. Two rain-affected wins have left New Zealand needing to win the remaining three matches to take the series.
Result: India won by 4 runs (DLS). New Zealand 134 all out (Daryl Mitchell 55, Mitchell Santner 31; Gurnoor Brar 4/30, Auqib Nabi 2/31). India 113/7 when rain stopped play (Shreyas Iyer 30, KL Rahul 26*; Kyle Jamieson 3 wickets, Jacob Duffy 3 wickets). India lead the series 2-0.
