Maaya Rajeshwaran’s Chennai Open run ends as Robin Montgomery wins 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-finals

Seventeen-year-old wildcard Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi lost 6-3, 6-3 to American Robin Montgomery in the Chennai Open quarter-finals, ending a run that made her the first Indian woman in a WTA Tour singles last eight since Sania Mirza in 2012. Montgomery now meets top seed Janice Tjen.

Chennai, India: The run that lit up the Chennai Open ended on Friday with its milestone intact. Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, a 17-year-old wildcard who began the week ranked 669th, lost 6-3, 6-3 to Robin Montgomery of the United States in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 event.

Montgomery’s power decides it

Montgomery, a left-hander and former top-100 player now ranked 151st, was the steadier player over 1 hour and 13 minutes. She broke serve five times, while Maaya struggled with her first serve and hit five double faults. The Indian teenager saved two of the seven break points she faced. Montgomery took the first set on her first set point and closed the match on her first match point.

A week that changed the story

The defeat does not diminish what came before it. Maaya opened the tournament by beating eighth seed Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5) after trailing in the decider, her first WTA 250 main-draw win. She followed it with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Polish qualifier Weronika Falkowska, a result that made her the first Indian woman to reach a WTA singles quarter-final since Sania Mirza at Pattaya in 2012. She is expected to move into the top 500 when the rankings update.

What is left for India in Chennai

Maaya’s exit ended India’s singles challenge. Vaishnavi Adkar lost in the second round to seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova, and Sahaja Yamalapalli lost in the first round to Simona Waltert. India’s remaining interest is in doubles, where Maaya with Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Vaishnavi with Rutuja Bhosale have both reached the quarter-finals. In the singles semi-finals Montgomery will face defending champion and top seed Janice Tjen, who beat sixth seed Polina Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The tournament runs through Sunday.

Result (Chennai Open, WTA 250, singles quarter-final, Friday 6 November 2026): Robin Montgomery (USA) bt Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi (IND, wild card) 6-3, 6-3. Semi-final: Montgomery v Janice Tjen (1).
