Koopmeiners and Kolo Muani give Juventus a 2-1 win at AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League

Teun Koopmeiners and Randal Kolo Muani scored before half-time as Juventus beat AZ Alkmaar 2-1 in the Europa League. Mexx Meerdink pulled one back late, and a stoppage-time AZ goal was ruled out for offside as Juventus reached 10 points from four games.

Alkmaar, Netherlands: Teun Koopmeiners scored against his former club, Randal Kolo Muani doubled the lead before the interval, and Juventus survived a frantic finish to win 2-1 at the AFAS Stadion and keep their unbeaten run in the Europa League league phase alive.

Koopmeiners strikes at his old club

Juventus took the lead in the 19th minute. Kolo Muani drove down the right and pulled the ball back, and Koopmeiners, who played for AZ before moving on, finished from the edge of the area.

The goal came on a counter-attack, and the second was not far behind.

Kolo Muani doubles the lead

In the 37th minute Kolo Muani added a goal of his own, a left-footed finish into the bottom corner that put Juventus 2-0 ahead at the break. The Frenchman had now been involved in both Juventus goals.

Meerdink makes it tense

AZ refused to go away after the interval. Mexx Meerdink pulled one back in the 88th minute, tapping in from close range after Elijah Dijkstra’s cross, and the home side pushed for an equaliser. Juventus saw three players booked in the second half, Andrea Cambiaso, Jeff Ekhator and Juan Cabal, as the tension rose.

AZ thought they had levelled in stoppage time, but the second goal was ruled out for offside. Juventus held on.

What it means for Juventus

The win is Juventus’s third in four league-phase matches, and it takes them to 10 points. They opened with a 5-0 win over NEC, beat Celta Vigo in stoppage time and drew 2-2 with Rennes. It also followed their 2-0 win over Napoli in Serie A last weekend, and Luciano Spalletti’s side stay unbeaten with direct qualification for the last 16 their aim.
