Shadman Islam was unbeaten on 99 off 219 balls as Bangladesh reached 213 for 3 in 74 overs on the first day of the first Test against West Indies in Mirpur, before bad light ended play and left him one run short of a century.
Mirpur, Bangladesh: Shadman Islam spent the whole day building an innings of patience and finished it one run short of a landmark. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, and they were 213 for 3 when the umpires called the players off for the final time.
West Indies press early
Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph asked questions with the new ball. Tanzid Hasan edged Seales to Justin Greaves at slip for 7 in the seventh over, and Seales finished the day with 1 for 14 from eight overs, three of them maidens. Bangladesh were 96 for 2 at lunch.
Warrican breaks the stands
Shadman and Mominul Haque added 59 for the second wicket before Mominul stepped out to Jomel Warrican and was caught at mid-off by Joseph for 28. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was then given out lbw to Warrican for 19 after West Indies successfully reviewed an on-field decision. Warrican finished with 2 for 33 from 14 overs. Joshua Bishop bowled 19 overs for 50 without a wicket.
Hridoy’s stand and a stretcher
Towhid Hridoy, playing his first Test since his debut in Harare in July, added 88 with Shadman for the fourth wicket, and Bangladesh reached tea at 177 for 3. Hridoy retired hurt on 42 off 84 balls and was carried off the field, ending the stand.
Light closes in on 99
Shadman reached his tenth Test half-century and then kept going. He was on 96 when bad light halted play for about 50 minutes. He added three runs after the restart, and four overs later the umpires stopped play again, leaving him on 99 off 219 balls with ten fours, short of what would have been a third Test century. Litton Das was unbeaten on 10 off 28 balls at the other end after the two shared an unbroken 15.
Shadman and Litton will resume on the second day, with the century one run away.
