Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert and Evanilson embrace in celebration during the Europa League win over Milan at the Vitality Stadium

Bournemouth 3-0 Milan: Two penalties, Maignan’s red card and Adli’s free-kick give Rose’s side a perfect Europa League start

Bournemouth beat Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium to make it three wins from three in the Europa League. Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier scored first-half penalties, Mike Maignan was sent off for Milan, and substitute Amine Adli curled in a late free-kick.

Bournemouth, England: A club in its first European campaign beat a seven-time European champion without conceding, and it was largely settled inside half an hour. Marco Rose’s Bournemouth were two goals up by the 32nd minute, Rúben Amorim’s Milan were down to ten men, and the Vitality Stadium had a night to savour.

Handball gives Bournemouth the early lead

The opening goal came from the spot. After a VAR check, the officials ruled that Koni De Winter had handled the ball in the Milan area, and Justin Kluivert sent goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way in the eighth minute. It carried an extra edge for the Dutch forward: more than 31 years earlier, his father Patrick had scored the winner for Ajax against Milan in the 1995 Champions League final.

Maignan sees red

Milan’s night unravelled in the 28th minute. As Bournemouth sent a corner into the box, Maignan shoved a home player in the face. Following a VAR review, the goalkeeper was shown a straight red card and Bournemouth were awarded a second penalty. Amorim sacrificed Omari Hutchinson to bring on reserve goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, and the substitute fared no better than his predecessor. Marcus Tavernier sent him the wrong way in the 32nd minute to make it 2-0.

Milan had arrived in good heart after beating Salzburg 4-0 on the previous matchday behind Alphadjo Cissè’s hat-trick. Against ten men for more than an hour, they never found a way back into the game.

Adli completes the job

Bournemouth kept attacking after the break, and the third goal arrived with six minutes left. Amine Adli, on as a substitute, curled a free-kick into the net to finish the contest.

The win leaves Bournemouth with nine points from three games and a perfect record, third in the league-phase table. It follows a 2-1 victory at Real Sociedad on matchday one and a 3-0 home win over Sturm Graz on matchday two. Tavernier, who also headed the opener in Bournemouth’s 2-0 league win over ten-man Sunderland days earlier, has now scored in successive matches.

Result summary: Bournemouth 3-0 Milan (UEFA Europa League, league phase, matchday 3, Thursday 22 October 2026, Vitality Stadium). Goals: Kluivert 8’ (pen), Tavernier 32’ (pen), Adli 84’. Red card: Maignan (Milan) 28’.
