Dilip Gavit won the men’s 100m at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya on Wednesday, running 10.69 seconds. Mohammed Basil took silver in 10.72, three hundredths behind, giving India a one-two finish and repeating the pair’s gold-silver result from the Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
Nagoya, Japan: Three hundredths of a second separated the first two finishers, and both wore India’s colours. Gavit, the 400m champion from the previous Asian Para Games, crossed the line first in the 100m final at Aichi-Nagoya. Basil followed close behind, and the Indian pair had the top of the podium to themselves.
Three hundredths between gold and silver
Gavit’s 10.69 seconds was enough to hold off his compatriot, whose 10.72 took silver. Most agency reports filed the race under the T47 classification, though some described it as a combined T46/T47 final, with Gavit running in T46 and Basil in T47. Pranav Desai added a third Indian sprint medal on the day, taking bronze in the men’s 100m T64 in 11.96 seconds.
Glasgow, then Nagoya
The result repeated an order that Indian para athletics has now seen twice this year. Gavit and Basil went gold and silver in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where Gavit’s run set a Games record on the seventh day of the competition. Nagoya gave the same two sprinters a continental stage, and they delivered the same finish.
From the 400m to the 100m
Gavit arrived in Japan with a sprint pedigree built over the longer distance. He won the men’s 400m T47 gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, a medal that was India’s 100th of those Games, and he reached the men’s 400m T47 final at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, finishing eighth. He comes from Toran Dongari, a village near Nashik in Maharashtra, and competes with his right arm amputated below the elbow.
A busy day for the India team
The sprint medals arrived on a day that also produced Praveen Kumar’s Games-record high jump gold, a result that followed the 24-medal haul on day two. Gavit’s gold added another entry to the India para athletics team’s growing list of titles in Aichi-Nagoya.
