Harmanpreet Kaur made an unbeaten 91 off 41 balls and Shafali Verma added 69 as India Women posted 216 for 7 and beat Zimbabwe by 92 runs in Raipur on Tuesday. Nandani Sharma took 3 for 18 as India completed a 3-0 series sweep.
Raipur, India: India Women had already won the series, and they played the final match as if they had a point to prove. Smriti Mandhana’s side won the toss, chose to bat at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium and finished with a total that Zimbabwe never got near.
Shafali and Anushka set the tone
Shafali Verma and Anushka Sharma opened with a stand of 54 before Anushka, who made 28 off 20 balls, fell to Nomvelo Sibanda in the sixth over. Niki Prasad followed for 9, and India were 68 for 2. It was the kind of position from which a side can stall.
It did not. Shafali kept hitting, and with Harmanpreet Kaur she added 84 for the third wicket. Her 69 came off 37 balls with six fours and five sixes, and it ended at 152 for 3 in the 15th over when Tendai Makusha caught her off Beloved Biza.
Harmanpreet closes it out
Harmanpreet took the innings from there. She finished on 91 not out from 41 balls, hitting ten fours and five sixes at a strike rate of about 222. The later batters gave her little support, with Richa Ghosh out for 1, Deepti Sharma for 0 and Arundhati Reddy and Prema Rawat for 4 each, Rawat run out, but Harmanpreet carried India to 216 for 7. Biza was the best of Zimbabwe’s bowlers with 3 for 50 from four overs.
Zimbabwe never recover
Zimbabwe’s chase started badly. Kranti Gaud removed Kelis Ndhlovu with the first ball, and Nandani Sharma had Modester Mupachikwa caught by Ghosh to leave them 12 for 2. Sharne Mayers made 60 and Biza 44, and the two did the rebuilding, but the required rate was always out of reach. Zimbabwe finished on 124 for 7, with Nandani taking 3 for 18 from her four overs.
A clean sweep for the new captain
The win completed a 3-0 sweep under Mandhana, who took over the captaincy for this series after Harmanpreet stepped down. India had won the opener with Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad and sealed the series by nine wickets in the second match.
