Gustavo Varela scored twice and set up another as Monza beat Cagliari 4-0 at the Brianteo on Monday. Eddy Kouadio struck before half-time and Jay Robinson added a third, handing Ivan Juric’s side only their second Serie A win of the season.
Monza, Italy: For 39 minutes the Brianteo waited. Then Monza scored four goals in the space of 40 minutes, and Cagliari had no answer to any of them.
Kouadio breaks the deadlock
The first half was tight until a Monza counter-attack changed it. Dany Mota’s long ball released Eddy Kouadio, who finished with his right foot in the 39th minute. Cagliari had their moments before the break, but it was Monza who led 1-0 at half-time.
Varela takes over
Two minutes after the restart Monza doubled the lead. Foe Ondoa found Varela, who finished with his right foot across goal. In the 66th minute Varela turned provider, setting up Robinson for the third.
The fourth came in the 79th minute. Robinson’s effort hit the post and Varela was first to the rebound, finishing from close range. It was his sixth league goal of the season, the most of any Monza player.
