Muñoz and Isak turn the game after Yarmoliuk’s red card as Liverpool beat nine-man Brentford 2-1

Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. Keane Lewis-Potter put the hosts ahead before Yehor Yarmoliuk’s first-half red card; Victor Muñoz equalised and Alexander Isak scored the winner as Brentford finished with nine men.

London, England: Liverpool arrived in west London six days after a 3-0 defeat by Manchester City, and for 44 minutes it looked as though their bad week would get worse. Brentford, unbeaten in the league until then, led at the break. What followed turned a flat afternoon into a win for Andoni Iraola’s side.

Lewis-Potter strikes, then Yarmoliuk is sent off

Keane Lewis-Potter headed Brentford in front in the 44th minute from Igor Thiago’s cross, moments after VAR had overturned a Liverpool penalty. Liverpool were already reorganising. Dominik Szoboszlai, who had returned to the starting line-up after injury, went off again on 32 minutes and was replaced by Trey Nyoni.

Then came the incident that decided the game. In first-half stoppage time, Yarmoliuk was sent off for a headbutting action on Jeremy Jacquet after a VAR check, and the referee cited violent conduct. Brentford, who had just taken the lead, would play the second half with ten.

Muñoz and Isak turn it around

Liverpool equalised in the 62nd minute. Florian Wirtz slipped a pass through to Muñoz on the right, and he finished to level the match. Eight minutes later Isak put them ahead: Alexis Mac Allister crossed to the back post, Bradley Barcola nodded the ball down, and Isak drove it in from close range. It was his fifth Premier League goal of the season, and it came after he had missed the defeat by Manchester City through injury.

Brentford had their chance to answer. Thiago missed a close-range opportunity in the 73rd minute that would have levelled the match. Liverpool lost Jeremie Frimpong to injury seven minutes after he came on as a substitute, replaced by Rio Ngumoha, but they held on.

Nine men at the finish

The game ended with Brentford further reduced. Vitaly Janelt was shown a second yellow card in the 92nd minute for a foul on Ngumoha near the edge of the area, leaving the hosts with nine players. It was Brentford’s first Premier League defeat of the season.

For Liverpool the result carries weight beyond three points. They moved to 12 points, into fifth place and ahead of Brentford, who are on 10. The win answers the 3-0 loss to Manchester City and follows Barcola’s hat-trick against LASK in the Champions League, and Barcola’s nod-down was central to the winner here as well. The injuries to Szoboszlai and Frimpong are the new concern for Iraola.

Result: Brentford 1 (Keane Lewis-Potter 44′) Liverpool 2 (Victor Muñoz 62′, Alexander Isak 70′)

Red cards: Yehor Yarmoliuk (Brentford) 45+8′; Vitaly Janelt (Brentford, second yellow) 90+2′

Venue: Gtech Community Stadium, Saturday 17 October 2026
